Hi I was wondering if anybody had a source for some form of
inexpensive cap and ball pistol kits i am looking to buy a pair.

any caliber is fine but would prefer smaller caliber i have seen some
but cant make myself part with the prices they are asking as i would be better of just buying a finished reproduction.Yes im a tight wad

school holidays are here and i wanted to build a couple of kits with my sons
to keep them of the bloody computer games and give em an apreciaction
for history and old firearms.

any links would be apreciated

The problem with revolver kits is that they are usually kits in name only, requiring little more than final assembly to complete. Thus, the high prices of the kits. Alot of manufacturers don't even bother with offering a kit form of their revolvers for this reason, as the price differance between a revolver kit, and a finished pistol, is negligable.

There are a few, a few mind you, low price revolvers out there, namely from Pietta, Pietta offers an 1858 New Army 44 Remington revolver with a brass frame, trigger gaurd and backstrap for on or about 200 from Dixie. I beleive also, this particular gun is available as a kit for around 180, but marketed under a different name for some reason. Both are available from Dixie.

As far as a smaller caliber pistol is concerned, I believe the 1858 is available in a 36 caliber as well. Going down even smaller, to the 31 caliber, 5 shot pocket pistols, those gemerally are offered starting at about 200 for a finished gun. But at 200, be prepared to take it apart and re-work it a bit, especially the Pietta 1863 Remington 31 cal 5 shot. Those guns, stock from the factory have hammer locking problems, nipple seating problems, and a problem with the loading levers as well. They are fixable problems, but somewhat annoying.

The possibles shop, offers alot of pistol kits, especially unusual ones, such as a 4 shot 36 cal pepperbox, and a number of other smaller, affordable single shot or multi barrel gun kits. But be forewarned, nearly all of those kits are out of production at this time, and delivery is spotty at best. I have seen some of these kits being offered on Guns America, and Ebay, and ususally at about 1/2 the list price as well.

1863 Remington 31 Cal Pocket Pistol by Pietta, available from Dixie for $199.00. Not a kit, but does need some TLC and finshing out of the box.

Classic Arms 4 barrel 36 Cal Pepperbox kit, which is now out of manufacture, but still listed in the Dixie catalog at around $140.00 or so. These kits are frequently offered for sale on Ebay and Guns America for about 1/2 of the list price.

Try Deer Creek. I think thhey have left over CVA kits or at least the complete parts kits.

There are some kits for single shots for about $200.00 for some of the lesser Traditions pistols. The Crockett in 32 cal. My first flint pistol kit was a CVA Kentucky which cost me $34 back in 1972. The days of those cheap kits is long past.

Thanks to our leaders the dollar against Euro currency is a tradgedy.

If you're going to have to shell out $200 for a kit perhaps you might look into Cabelas sale right now on the Pietta Remington finished 1858 model for $199.99...spend the time at the range with the boys shooting instead of building?
Just a thought.

I'm surprised Ebay allows the pepperbox to be sold there...they stopped allowing anything that can be shot or made into a firearm some years back which was very upsetting to gunowners!

Ebay allows B/p parts and kits to some extent, you can't sell a complete gun, hense all the stocks, locks and barrels sold separately, it actually works out better for the seller, but sucks when you end up with a stock and lock and get outbid on the barrel or the other way round. They also won't allow posting without the: not a gun, disclaimer.

ROBHOF
I realize that...I was referring to "complete" kits as was Elvin...if I read him correctly. It's not truly a BP kit unless it's complete...and as I said...they stopped allowing anything that can be shot or made into a firearm!
I hope we're not going to debate muzzleloaders are not firearms because Ebay doesn't recognize that fine point of law.

It really knaws my saddle that these internet providers invent their own rules for everything. Like in chat rooms, if someone goes off on someone else, there are posted rules about "no cyber-bullying", but, generally, no-one is there to enforce them, and, "defending" yourself generally gets you into more trouble than the person doing the bullying to begin with.

I didn't know about the Ebay rules, well, that probably explains the low prices there then, if they split the kit up into pieces, crapola, I guess I would just stick with CVA and Guns America then.

Sincerely,

Thanks for the replies that little pepperbox might be ok. did not realy
care if it was a revolver a single shot would be fine.

I would STAY AWAY from that pepper box kit, and anythng else made by Classic Arms. I had the pepper box revolver... not fit for rust. The Classic Arms offerings won't even make a good bumper on a Yugo. Just my experience with their products...
