Krav Maga, is any training "real" training?

I think you have the right attitude. No matter what training you choose, I am a firm believer in requiring full contact training for it to be "real". If you aren't getting your nose broken, or a black eye occasionally, it isn't preparing you for a real fight. I say a good ratio is 70/30, 70% technique, conditioning and light sparring/drilling, 30% full contact high speed sparring.

Re: Judo

Learning Judo breakfalls has saved me from serious injury on numerous occasions. I recall as a 12 year old being thrown around the mats by Sensei and various higher ranked students. It is amazing how useful it is to be able to go "flop" without sack-of-cement stop.

Learning that bit can be a bit .... painful. Best learned under 40 than over.

The emphasis on competition forces you to learn to do things right, evaluate an opponent, adapt your methods to advantages and shortcomings, deal with superior skills and surprises, etc.

Take from it what works for you. Ponder again, from time to time, what seems to not.

A significant, if not deciding factor is the teacher, rather than the specific style. Most styles will have techniques which are directly applicable to self defense, but the teacher has to be able to convey that information to you and help you improve on the ability to put those skills into practice during a high stress, dynamic situation.

Was that your first class?

Was that the only class you went to?

Here there are four levels of Krav Maga. All the levels may be mixed in a level one class, as level one includes a LOT of conditioning to get you street fight ready. Lots of people myself included are coming in pretty out of shape, and as was said, that can lead to injuries.

So yes, to get good at Krav, ANY Krav class is going to condition the bejesus out of you!!

The bat and knife and gun defense training will come later...

And yes, the small female instructor holding the bag is there for a reason. How many punches do you need to throw before you have muscle memory? Correction- how many punches with proper form do you need to throw before it becomes automatic?

Those punches against the bag she is holding is conditioning your knuckles.

I'm not sure if the class you did was legit Krav or not, but it sounds like you went to one class, had to do some intense conditioning (which any place should have you doing), and some basic stuff and you were sad because they didn't make you fight 30 ninjas your first night...I would go for a couple months, if you aren't rolling by then maybe you're right.
