NEW ORLEANS -- A missing high-powered sub-machine gun was back in the hands of St. Tammany Parish sheriff's officials Wednesday after an exclusive report on WDSU NewsChannel 6 alerted a viewer.
"We are glad we were are able to get the weapon back with the help of Channel 6, and that no one is injured," Sheriff Jack Strain said.
The expensive and dangerous sub-machine gun disappeared in December from the trunk of the car of a deputy assigned to the SWAT team.
The sheriff's office did not publicize the disappearance of the gun, but did launch a search for it.
Strain said minutes after the report aired on TV, phones began to ring at his office.
"We're proud to say that this morning we did recover the weapon," Strain said. "This is the weapon that has been missing for almost two months: a fully automatic, 9mm Henkler and Koch sub-machine gun."
"One of our deputies received a call early this morning that they knew a neighbor who had found a weapon of this description," Strain said. "Within moments, as you can well imagine, our deputies responded to that address where the guy readily admitted, 'Yes, I found the weapon.'"
The man, whose name is not being released, told deputies he found the gun along Highway 434 in Lacombe in early December. He said he thought it probably belonged to a drug dealer, and he kept it to get it off the streets.
The man also told deputies the gun had obviously been recently fired when he found it.
Strain said the man is not a suspect. His department is now trying to determine if the gun was stolen.
Strain said he is reviewing all procedures involving automatic weapons in the custody of his deputies. He said some new policies likely will result from the incident.
Meanwhile, the deputy who lost control of the gun has been removed from the department's SWAT team.
