Three men, including an "extra help" employee of the Kern County Sheriff's Department, were arrested in connection with the theft of 20 handguns from the department's property room during the last five months.
The discovery of the theft came on May 14 when an 18-year-old man was arrested in Los Angeles for possession of a concealed weapon, deputies reported.
The gun was traced to the Kern County sheriff's property room.
An audit was conducted and it was found that 20 handguns — all from cases whose trials had been concluded — were missing.
Detectives identified Edgard Luis Nava, 18, an extra-help employee hired in December as a possible suspect, deputies said.
A warrant to search his home revealed evidence that he was involved in the theft of the firearms, although none were found in his home, deputies said. The evidence was not disclosed.
But deputies reported they also found a small amount of methamphetamine and Nava was booked into the jail on charges of possession of methamphetamine and 19 counts of firearm theft. His bail was set at $200,000.
The investigation identified several locations where it is believed the stolen firearms had been disposed. Five search warrants were served and three handguns were recovered, deputies said.
Aaron Walker, 18, was arrested on suspicion of possession of one of the firearms and possession of marijuana, deputies said.
The man arrested in Los Angeles was identified as Jesus Hermino Ramos-Gomez, 18, a Kern County resident, deputies said."

I guess these fellers couldn't wait for their stimulus checks.
