A missing high-powered sub-machine gun was back in the hands of St. Tammany Parish sheriff's officials Wednesday after an exclusive report on WDSU NewsChannel 6 alerted a viewer.

"We are glad we were are able to get the weapon back with the help of Channel 6, and that no one is injured," Sheriff Jack Strain said.

The expensive and dangerous sub-machine gun disappeared in December from the trunk of the car of a deputy assigned to the SWAT team.

The sheriff's office did not publicize the disappearance of the gun, but did launch a search for it.

Strain said minutes after the report aired on TV, phones began to ring at his office.

"We're proud to say that this morning we did recover the weapon," Strain said. "This is the weapon that has been missing for almost two months: a fully automatic, 9mm Henkler and Koch sub-machine gun."

"One of our deputies received a call early this morning that they knew a neighbor who had found a weapon of this description," Strain said. "Within moments, as you can well imagine, our deputies responded to that address where the guy readily admitted, 'Yes, I found the weapon.'"

The man, whose name is not being released, told deputies he found the gun along Highway 434 in Lacombe in early December. He said he thought it probably belonged to a drug dealer, and he kept it to get it off the streets.

The man also told deputies the gun had obviously been recently fired when he found it.

Strain said the man is not a suspect. His department is now trying to determine if the gun was stolen.

Strain said he is reviewing all procedures involving automatic weapons in the custody of his deputies. He said some new policies likely will result from the incident.

Meanwhile, the deputy who lost control of the gun has been removed from the department's SWAT team.

More obnoxious hyperbole

A missing high-powered sub-machine gun ... "This is the weapon that has been missing for almost two months: a fully automatic, 9mm Henkler and Koch sub-machine gun."

Since when is a 9mm considered "high-powered" (the BHP notwithstanding). I'm sick of the terms "high-powered" and "assault" being tacked onto the description of every freakin' firearm in the news!

Side note to so-called editor's and those who's job it is to check facts; ITS HECKLER YOU IDIOT! :cuss:

[Jon Lovitz voice] Yeah ... that's the ticket ... musta been dropped by a drug dealer ... yeah ... sure officer, that's it ... yeah ;) [/Jon Lovitz voice]

The annoying thing is the public thinks that's reasonable. But how many drug dealers are there running around St. Tammany Parish New Orleans with $15000 MP5s?

Not disagreeing with you, but how many of the "general public" would know a $15000 MP5 if they saw one? Most of the sheeple would see a "machine gun" and logically assume it belonged to a drug dealer because all drug dealers have machine guns (according to the media).

Any report on barrel condition or locking roller wear?

It's only $15k for us lowly peasants (pre ban fully transferable). I don't know what the price to a LE agency would be but I doubt if it is more than 1/3 of that.

Hey...I already posted this in General Discussion. And from someone in the "city" this didn't happen in New Orleans. It happened about a half hour drive away from here. And the drug dealers/gangs seem to lean towards the illegally converted AK variant here in New Orleans.

I'm sure it's not worth $5000 if it is not transferable. I'd guess a lot closer to $1000.

Haven't looked lately, but an MP5 was about $900 to LE agencies in small lots in the later 1990's. M1911 is right...probably about $1K right now.

Doesn't that make you sick? I would love to buy an MP-5 at that price.
