CMP just acquired a considerable amount of Lake City M2 Ball ammo. Their price is $192 + $38 S&H = $230/960 rounds =~ $0.24/round, in 20-rd boxes. Not bad.

Question: How does the Lake City M2 compare to the Danish surplus 30-06, which has been excellent by all accounts?

AmmoMan still has some of the Danish, 1991, in enblocks and bandoleers for $230/624 rounds =~ $0.37/round (+ S&H?) - I don't know if anyone else has any...

Opinion: I wonder if the CMP offering will motivate other sources to come down in price. Remember, the Danish used to be quite a bit cheaper several months ago, but as supply dried up, the prices escalated.

Thanks -

Alex

What are the specs on the M2 round itself again?

Was the M2 the general purpose lead core ball ammo round? Weight of the bullet?

Or is this the surp. AP bullet? Curious because sometimes I see conflicting information for what the M2 round was, is there both an M2 AP cartridge as well as an M2 ball round?

There was AP, tracer, and Ball. This is Ball.

I have LC66 and Danish AMA 74 and 91. Some rifles seem to like one or the other better. The Danish is hotter and maybe slightly more accurate. It is also boat tailed so it might be better in Service Rifle matches at 600 yards (where issue M2 Ball is pretty tough to score with). But the M2 is reloadable, or the cases sell for 0.04 to 0.06 each once fired.

Mr. Michaels indicates they will have it for a good two years, so you can simply wait for someone to fire it.

I bought Danish for $0.27 per round in clips and bandoliers. So .37 is pretty healthy - within a penny or two of Commercial Federal, which is reloadable.

You are correct, VG - it is Ball, and perhaps it is better to wait and let some of the guys try it. And yes, I remember paying from as low as around 22¢/round in enbloc clips not so long ago, up to 27¢/round (shipped) in 30-rd original factory boxes just five weeks ago, so 37¢/round is a bit steep.

Let's just keep watching and each other informed for the good deals, as they are bound to be some left. Today, for example, I found the proven excellent Portuguese .308 at a gun show for $165/1000 ($16.5¢/round!) - higher than has been in the recent past, but still a heck of a deal for this superb ammo.
