I've seen that you can purchase the extra stones separately for both the Lansky and Gatco systems, for maybe $8-$10 each. They go up to ~1200 grit for an exemplary edge.

Awesome! I have the Lansky system and though it takes a bit for me to break it out I then do several knives and they are all very sharp when I put it away.

Yes.. I saw them there. Given how happy I am now, I'll probably buy the other two stones as well.

Question... am I correct in assuming that the advantage of the diamond stones are:

1) Longevity of the stone
2) Being able to sharpen the knife a little quicker

3) but not really getting a sharper knife as that has to due with the # of grit and not the material of the grit?

Currently I'm happy with the performance overall and dont see a compelling reason to get the diamond stones when I buy two more but maybe I'm missing something.

I don't use diamond stones, so I can't say for sure, but I think you've got the jist of it.

The advantages of finer stones are in producing a finer, more polished edge. The finer the microscopic "teeth" of the blade, the more smooth the cut, the thinner a slice you can make, etc.

For most uses the stones that come with the system will produce all the edge you want. If you're going for better than "razor sharp" you'll want to take it to the next level.
