Yeah Longeyes, don't take it so literal. For the most part people will be willing to help people. Part of all that talk is rural vs. urban chest thumping.
Now is there is a catastrophic disaster and Los Angeles disappears into a vapor cloud, TV isn't going to matter much. The crap being imported in from China to the Port of Los Angeles isn't going to matter much. Life as we know it is going to get a lot less comfy and a lot more practical.
Urban vs. Rural might be counterproductive, but it is what it is. When urban America pulls their heads out of their butts and starts voting for freedom and liberty and stops trying to make all of America a socialist utopian dreamland, I will start feeling sorry for urban dwellers when they get bit by their choosen lifestyle. AKA, I am tired of Los Angeles ruining this state.
If the terrorists shut down I-5, we would try and open it back up. Are the terrorists going to set up a fire team and harrass the construction crews with combat? Most doubtful. Will they run explosive ladden cars into the construction workers? Once or twice before we start seeing checkpoints and the Muslin population in California is quashed. Al Qaeda doesn't have unlimited resources and agents in America. They are under intense scrutiny and operational security is a huge concern. I contend they are not as capable as we tend to make them out as. If they were, I think we would hear from them more often.

Ah, a classic line I keep running into around here. The terrorists are so smart and so capable and there is not much we can do to stop them. If the terrorists could shut down I-5 and keep it shut down, throwing California's economy, and the entire West Coast for that matter, into chaos and turmoil, then why haven't they done it yet? If suicide bombings and train attacks are so hard to stop and so effective for the terrorists to shut down our way of life, why haven't they been doing it? I contend that they don't have the assets in place that so many of us seem to think they do.And I'm not in the terrorism business but if badguys really want to make sure I-5 ain't operational they are smart enough to figure out a way to keep repairs from happening.
