"Hi

I'm behind on requests. I'm behind on the new web page. I'm behind
on egroup maintenance. I thank you for your patience in that and in
these emails. But I testified last Thursday against `shall' issue
CCW bills. My take—our (oops) the gun lobby's elected officials will
push bills that weaken the right of communities to determine the
correct public safety policies for their citizens and push bills that
grant special treatment to the gun lobby.

Have you noticed more bad news in the papers regarding the state of
the state of Colorado? This isn't urgent, but if you have time, drop
the Governor a line or call and ask why so much effort is being made
to pass bills specifically for the gun lobby while little progress is
being made to solve Colorado's problems. Tell him that you also
voted in the last election. (Colorado is crashing and burning.)

Oh, as always forward this email and copy the Governor on all emails
you send to regarding legislation. Don't worry about being a pain or
polite because he and all those elected are accountable to the people
NOT to special interests.

In this update:
..Legislative Update from Colorado Ceasefire
..Calls and emails needed – PSR/Tom Mauser/Colorado Ceasefire
..People Power needed this weekend
..For ease in sending email to all of the Senators on SB25 - SENATE
EMAIL ADDRESSES FOR CUTTING AND PASTING are at the very bottom of the
letter – note that 3 senators don't have email. Outlook users
replace `,' with `;'.

1) !!!! URGENT !!!
SB25 (Preemption Bill) is likely to be voted on the senate floor on
MONDAY, JANUARY 27TH.

This bill would wipe out all existing local gun laws and prohibit
municipal and county officials from enacting any laws regarding the
ownership, possession, use or transfer of a firearm that is more
restrictive than state law. This bill is a violation of the basic
conservative philosophy of local power as best. Instead,
conservative state legislators are setting up limits on what any
city, town or county can do to address serious local public safety
issues.

Please call your state senator as soon as possible and ask her or him
to vote NO on SB25.

Sample Script: "Senator _____________, as your constituent (if you
are), I wanted to share with you that I am very concerned about
removing the power of our (your community) city council to promote
public safety in city/town/county. SB25 ties the hands of our local
officials when they seek to address local public safety issues. I
urge you to vote NO on SB25."

It is also extremely important that the following senators be called:

Bob Hagedorn (D-Aurora [email protected] 303-866-4879
Alice Nichol (D-Adams) [email protected] 303-866-4865
Lew Entz (R-Hooper)[email protected] 303-866-4871
Steve Johnson (R-Fort Collins) [email protected] 303-
866-3342
Ken Kester (R-Las Animas)[email protected] 303-866-4877
Norma Anderson (R Lakewood) [email protected] 303-866-

2) These Feet Were Made for Walking (apologies to Nancy Sinatra)

Join Colroado Ceasefire in helping spread the message door-to-door
(drop literature). If you would like to help spread the word about
the current crop of reckless gun laws (and get some exercise, to
boot), join us one of the following days this weekend:

Saturday, Jan. 25th , 10 a.m.
Meeting place: To be determined. Reply to this email to r.s.v.p.
Tell us: Who you are, your phone number, and how many are coming

Sunday. Jan. 26th, Noon
Meeting place: To be determined. Reply to this email to r.s.v.p.
Tell us: Who you are, your phone number, and how many are coming

3) Legislative Update: The Uglier of the Ugly Prevails.

Today the Senate State Veterans and Military Affairs Committee (THE
most conservative committee in the senate) heard testimony on two
concealed carry bills:
SB63 (Sen. Lamborn and Rep. Schultheis)
SB24 (Sen. Chlouber and Rep. White).

Colorado Ceasefire views both bills as a menace to public safety.
Each would dramatically increase the number of people carrying
hidden handguns on the streets. The Chlouber bill has a few more
restrictions than the Lamborn bill, which generally requires sheriffs
to grant a hidden handgun permit to anyone who can pass a limited
background check.

After hearing testimony for both bills, Sen. Lamborn (committee
chair) tabled the Chlouber (SB24) bill to allow his bill (SB63) to
be considered alone. Undeterred by this legislative maneuver, five
senators supported this major revamping of state law.

Voting in FAVOR of SB63:
Sen. Alice Nichol (D-Adams County) Sen. Doug Lamborn (R-Colorado
Springs) Sen. John Andrews (R-Centennial) Senate President Sen. Bruce
Cairns (R-Aurora) Sen. Ron May (R-Colorado Springs)
Voting AGAINST SB63:
Sen. Moe Keller (D-Wheat Ridge) THANK YOU MOE!!!!
Absent:
Sen. Deanna Hanna (D-Lakewood)

Next stop for SB63: Senate Appropriations, then the Senate Floor.
A Guess on what is happening: This bill will be run through the
legislative gauntlet. If it fails, they'll reactivate the Chlouber
bill (since it was tabled, it can be brought up again), and trumpet
it as a major moderate compromise. Get ready to pull on your boots;
the rhetoric is going to get deep and, to those concerned about gun
violence, rather stinky.

Feeling WORRIED Yet? You Should be!

4) From Tom Mauser:

Dear Supporters of Closing the Gun Show Loophole,

Less than 3 years ago, 70% of Colorado voters supported Amendment 22
to close the gun show loophole. 2000 volunteers had collected the
signatures to get it on the ballot. If that wasn't a mandate, I
don't know what is!

Now, Rep. Ray Rose of Montrose has introduced HB 1119 which would
effectively reopen the gun show loophole we closed! If passed, HB
1119 would:

* Loosen the definition of gun show so that guns could be sold
without background checks at gun shows not advertised as such or at
small gun shows.
* Allow gun sales transactions started in a gun show to be completed
off the premise without a background check, i.e. in the parking lot.
* Allow guns to be traded or bartered at gun shows without background
checks.

We all worked too hard to let them reopen the gun show loophole!
Call your legislators, write letters to the editors, e-mail this to
friends, LET THEM KNOW THAT WE WILL NOT TOLERATE THIS!

Thanks for all of your support then and your support now,
Tom Mauser, father of slain Columbine student Daniel Mauser

HB1119 is scheduled to heard in committee on THURSDAY, JANUARY 30,
1:30 P.M., House State, Veterans & Military Affairs Committee, Room

The correct choice of words ...

"Each would dramatically increase the number of >people< carrying hidden handguns on the streets."

Read that "law-abiding, tested, trained, photographed, finger-printed, investigated, interviewed, CITIZENS"!!

:fire:

Read that "law-abiding, tested, trained, photographed, finger-printed, investigated, interviewed, CITIZENS"!!

I'll go as far as law-abiding citizens, but fail to see any justification for testing, training, photography, finger-printing, and interviewing.

I would go so far as to add an extra ten years to the sentence of anyone convicted of committing a crime involving the use of a deadly weapon.

The onus of government belongs on those who break the law, not those who uphold it.
