Leave Alaska & Vermont out. Leave "no issue" states out, and leave out states where the system is set up to de facto require large political donations.

Include ALL costs and fees -- class fees, permit fees, fingerprint fees, background check fees.

Which state has the least expensive carry permit?

Which state's permit is most expensive?

i think NH is the cheapest, at $10 for residents, no classes required.

As far as most expensive, probably Colorado. Its $152.50 plus a class.

CALIFORNIA = $555.95 + Psychological Testing (if required)

Here's the breakdown for Orange County, California:

Class: $179.95 + $25.00 each for 2nd and 3rd gun = $229.95

Permit fees: DOJ = $90.00; Local = $100.00 = $190.00

Combined total for above = $419.95

Also, the class requires 400 rounds of ammunition (for 3 guns), if you want to be picky and include ALL costs = 8 boxes @ $17.00/box = $136.00 for a grand total of approx = $555.95.

If you want to be super picky, you can add in your travel time for the following:

Class = 2 days in adjacent county.

Interview at Sheriff's office in lovely downtown Santa Ana.

Go to Sheriff's office for "Livescan" fingerprinting (this is done only after your application has been reviewed after the interview for about a month or more).

Have Sheriff's Armorer inspect handguns at the Sheriff's gun range.

Bring Armorer's inspection report to the Sheriff's office to get your permit.

The above shows that you need to put in a little bit of time and driving to go through the whole process - it's not quick!

California State law also allows the governing agency for CCW permits, most often the County Sheriff, but sometimes the Chief of Police, to require "Psychological Testing" before a permit is issued - thankfully the Orange COunty Sheriff does not require this - Psychologists generally charge about $100.00 per hour.

My home state is AR. That one cost me:

$144 ($120 + $24 for Fingerprints)
$75 for the class
----------------
$219

My FL permit cost:

$117 [$75 license and $42 fingerprint process fee]

Didn't need a class for that one. A licensed instructor at a range I shoot at weekly signed off on the training requirement for the FL license for free. :)

Utah

I paid $43 for my class which included, fingerprinting, 2 passport photo's, and notarizing. Then I think $59 to BCI.

In Massachusetts FIDs and all LTC classes cost $100 for six years. The price includes, electronic finger printing, digital photos, background check and application fee. An applicant applies for a FID or LTC through their local Police Dept. The only license that allows one to conceal carry is an LTC Class A with no restrictions. Not all towns/cities LEOs give Class A licenses, without restrictions, so it depends on where one lives if they can recieve a CCW approval. First timers without any license will have to take a one-time State approved firearm course before they apply for a firearm license, added expense between $25-$100 depending on where it is being taught.

Shelby Co. AL. where I am: 5 minute application, $20.00.
I think Jefferson Co (Birmingham ) is $7.50 with a fairly simple application.

Mississippi is $100 + $29 for fingerprints. No class required. That'd be okay if they didn't make you wait four months for it to come in the mail.

Well, the guy in CA has my TN costs beaten, but here is what it costed me in Tennessee.

$75 for the safety class. About $30 in ammo. $115 for the permit.

So, $190 if you don't include ammo, $220 with it.

Using a .22 instead of a .45 would have helped, and the class varies depending on who you go to. $75 seems to be about standard, though I have heard of prices ranging from free, to >$200

Michigan

Class = $150.00

I had to buy their ammo = $36.00

Passport Photos = $7.00

State paperwork and printing = $140.00

Total = $333.00

If I would not of brought my own gun and ear protection it would of been another $50.00

The CHL... as it is "up here."

OREGON (Lane County): $65 for the first CHL, $50 to renew four years later.
I.D. card with photo--included both times.
$75 for the Basic Handgun Safety class at our classy indoor range. (8 hours)(bring own gun, ammo)
$95 for the BHS at a local, high-quality firearms academy just up the road. (8 hours)(ditto on gun, ammo)

Ohio

Two and a half years ago now....

$100 for the class.

45 for the Sheriff (more if you're a recent immigrant to OH).

15 for a box of .38's, roughly.

13 for the pictures.

$175 give or take....

My favorite instructor is now charging about $25 more. Guess you could call it $200. I didn't shop around - the dealer who sponsored the course is practically family. No break on the price  (or the exam & qualification :) ), but at least I get good prices on guns....

While it's not true that my first carry was a matchlock (flintlocks were just a passing fad :neener: ), I hadn't been on the range for a long time, and wanted to take something that'd be reliable and reasonably unlikely to cause problems. I took an ancient 4" S&W M10HB.... It worked.... (A 6" M19 seemed overkill. My buddy brought an M41 - .22LR target gun. Hm....)

Disregarding the comments elsewhere (here and on the OFCC site) about whether or not we should do this training at all, I think the newbies in the group learned a great deal, and us old timers (they wouldn't accept my 1968 OPOTA certification) got a chance to get in a little enforced range time and a refresher on the new law.

'Course, don't tell my wife - this has cost me a LOT more.... The very first shot from the old M10HB reminded me of how much fun I'd missed. I joined the local Rod & Gun Club (great indoor and outdoor ranges), which set me back about $1000 over 18 months, and we won't even talk about how many new guns "I found in the safe"....

$20-ish for PA and NH too.... I live about 20 miles from the PA line, and get over there often enough.

Good poll - this should be sticky!

Regards,

Maybe I need to quit drinking shoe polish

I live in PA (right outside of philadelphia) and mine was $40 and NO passport photos.

and it's right there on the way home from work :):D

Massachusetts Non-resident: Most expensive.

$20 Photo ID
$100 application fee
$20 misc (envelopes, self addressed stamped mailer, copier fees for copying resident licenses, notary public fees)
$5.00 gas to local PD for fingerprinting
$30 for state background check

Total of about $175... however ONLY GOOD FOR ONE CALENDAR YEAR!

Next year, same fees. So if you add up the usual 4 year program, it's $700.00

Edit: add in the fees for your resident permit, needed for the nonresident MA permit.

****************
My home state, Maine, is $35 for the permit, plus costs for the class. I think the renewal is $25 or $30.

100 dollars for the 8 hr required MO class that includes the NRA basic pistol class and the range qualifications. 117 for my FL permit, and 3.50 for finger prints. MO permit is 76 dollars in Stl county, but I dont turn 23 till next month. Plus with My FL one when I get pulled over when they run my DL it wont pop up:) So I dont have to tell the cop Im packing.

California 500 something bucks!!! Thats total A%% rape! Having to get your guns inspected by a armour? Screw that! I take my guns to a gunsmith I choose. Mental test? Thats the funny part. How did Feinstein somehow pass a mental test?

Btw the FL permit good for 5 years, and took just over 50 days to get in the mail. Most places in MO take the full 45 days, plus time going to DMV and all figure close to 50. I was impressed with the speedy time of FL. I hear Utah at one point this year was pretty quick too.

California's CCW is $849.95 for 4 years

In response to jamz' post above:

California's Standard CCW is only good for 2 years.

To get the 4 year cost you must add up all the renewal stuff:

Permit fees for 2 year renewal: DOJ = $42.00; Local = $25.00 = $67.00

Renewal class = $75.00 first handgun, $25.00 each for 2nd & 3rd = $125.00

Ammunition = 100 rounds/handgun x 3 = 6 boxes @$17.00/box =$102.00

Total for above = $294.00

Add this to the initial 2 year cost (described in my previous post) of $555.95 and you get a grand total of $849.95 for 4 years of CCW.

And again for those super picky people who want to add in travel time:

Class = 1 day in adjacent county

Have Sheriff's Armorer inspect handguns at the Sheriff's gun range.

Bring Armorer's inspection report to the Sheriff's office to get your permit.

Sure ... California is really expensive, but, at least you can still have a CCW if you're willing to jump through the hoops (and have a gun-friendly Sheriff).

edit reason: 1) I can't add straight; 2) I cited erroneous information

Don't forget the big apple!

When I had a NY permit, if I remember correctly:
$125 or so for fees and prints
$150 or so for the class

Plus $5 to add a pistol to your permit.

Each Alabama county seems to charge a different amount. Ours is $25.00 a year. Our state "representative" raised our local amount, with the "excess" going to the Sheriff's Dept. as an equipment fund. He was promptly voted out of office, but no one has since lowered the fee. As AlHunter pointed out, some are cheaper.

No fingerprints
No passport photos
No CCW class requirement
About 10 minutes in and out

What a bargain;)

I cant believe some states require fingerprints!!:cuss:
At some point a line in the sand has to be drawn. If MN EVER required that I would stop getting the permit.....

Creek County, Oklahoma - This is what I went thru:
5 Year privilage to protect myself and family.

OSBI background check and fee - $100.00

Oklahoma Concealed Carry Class for document, photos For Concealed Carry Permit and Tulsa Firearms Range Membership - $135.00

Sheriff, Creek county finger printed me twice, both times OSBI refused to accept the finger print cards stating they were not good enough. I feel sorry for the Sheriff's Dept as their prints on criminals probably ain't good enough for OSBI.

Gas for two trips to the Sheriff's office - $20.00

Trip from Sapulpa to Oklahoma City to have OSBI finger print me, another $20 bucks and a day off of work. OSBI has to accept their own prints is why I went and had them do it.

All in all, initial $275 bucks and 75 days to get my CCW card. I had less hassle getting my machine gun but I was not going to let that stop me!.:barf:
