I recently purchased an 1895 Cowboy in 45-70 (what a hoot to shoot) and have been considering a scope. However, I want to maintain the traditional look and thought Leatherwood 17" and 18" (3x or 6x) Malcome scope would look good but I have a few questions for the group.
1. Is Leatherwood a good manufacturer and will it hold up to the deadly recoil of the 45-70? All of the descriptions I read are about black powder gun usage which would have much less kick.
2. Best of all worlds, I would like to mount a more traditional scope (Leatherwood or other) in a see-through mount so that I can maintain the existing sites. The Leatherwood mount doesn't appear to allow that as it seems to use the dovetails that are currently occupied by the sites. Any thoughts on this would be helpful.
Thanks.
