They are cheap because they are largely molded plastic, metal rod and aluminum castings. Once the dies are made cost is minimal to produce.
They do work. I've had both 12 and 20, many years ago.
Way too slow for my trap and skeet habits.
 
Agree PapaG. To answer your question of component need, if you don't have a Shotshell Reloading Manual obtain one, Layman's #5 is a good choice. You ca n access load data from powder manufacturer's data and wad manufacturer's. Once recipe choices determined, have at it, I usually load a few and check patterns and Powder residue burn results. One advantage of the Lee is easy to change recipe quickly for comparing loads. If your goal is clay pigeon games the MEC is probably a better choice as you will be loading for quantity and not changing recipes.
