Are you talking about the Lee type that you beat on with a hammer, or one of the others?
I have had no issues using the Lee hand priming press with Wolf primers, but at least in small pistol they tend to run a little snug, due to being slightly larger than others from what I've heard.
I think he's asking about the Lee Auto Prime. I know of no cautionary issues using Wolf primers. However if you're unsure only put 1/2 box in the primer holder at a time. Simple solution.
Doing 50 Wolf primers one time and not having the problem is not why Lee has the caution.
Some primers loose a little of the compound as dust and after a period of time enough collects that can cause an explosion if conditions are right. See more in Lee's reloading manual.
The Lee literature specifically says to use CCI or Winchester primers.
For the Load Master they also sell a blast shield to be used when not using CCI or Win.
I'm not sure of their motivation for doing so, but during the shortage I used what ever primers I could get, including Fed, CCI, Win & Remington. I had no adverse effects.
I think you are referring to the small reloading kit without a press. A hammer is used. I had one of those years ago and remember popping a primer when I struck too hard with a hammer. Never had a primer go off when I would "tap tap tap", (as instructed) but a "smack" will give a crack. Not much more than a scare but that was bad enough. I doubt any primer would stand up to a good smack, or it wouldn't be trustworthy. I'd just tap, tap, tap, with a small hammer if I were you.
I have used Federals exclusively for over twenty years in both of my Lee Pro 1000s and, now, my 650s. Also in my Square Deal B. No problem. Never used Wolf.
I have used Federal, Winchester, Wolf, and CCI primers in my Lee Auto-Prime and in my Safety Prime on my Turret press. No problems at all, and they have seen lots of primers.
