If anyone has a Lee Turret press, can you confirm the small square black plastic piece is a spare part that goes on the index rod? It is about 3/8" sq and open in the center.

Yep, that's the index ratchet. More often than not, new users think it's a piece of plastic scrap and throw it away.

Surprisingly, the little things will run for ages provided you learn to NEVER turn the turret manually without 1st raising the ram a couple of inches. The index ratchet just "floats" in the clamp and raising the ram frees it up preventing binding.

I destroyed the 1st one, figured out the cause and the replacement I put in is still there. Be particularly careful when changing the turret out if you use more than one. I think Lee sells them 2/$1.00 so it don't hurt to have a spare, JIC.

When I first got my Turret Press I went through 2 or 3 of those ratchets because I was making a few mistakes. The current ratchet had been in the press for right around 3 years now. (which is surprising since they do ware out from normal use too) Just a tip, when you do need to change one take note on which end is up and which is down. I put one in upside down which accounts for one of the first few I ruined.

Yeah, I nearly did! I don't recall anything in the paperwork stating what it was, either. Would it be so hard, or cost so much, for them to put those in a little ziploc bag with a piece of paper saying what it is?

I like my Lee stuff, but their instructional materials leave a lot to be desired.

You're right "rondog" you would think with all the business Lee does they could employ someone who can write and take pictures for a good manual...

Lee Press

Thanks for the responses..

Editingfx...I like that answer .

regarding the instructions, they are definitely lacking, however, I had already read about those complaints beforehand.

Now hopefully my the place I sent my mom to will have some primer as the website says. Fortunately she is in Pensacola this week.

I have used my lee Turret press for about 2 years over 15000 rounds still have that square black plastic piece on my bench. I'm not sure what you are saying it is for. can you explain again what it is used for?

At the top of the the ram, where the shell holders snap in, there's a black plastic clamp thingie, the square drive shaft runs through the back of it. If you took that clamp thingie apart, that little square piece is inside of it. It fits over the square drive shaft, and that's what makes the shaft turn. When the twisted part of the shaft is forced through that square piece, it turns the shaft 90 degrees.

Hang onto that spare square dealy, they DO wear out! Wouldn't hurt to have more than one. If it breaky, the turret no turny.

I'm constantly amazed at how durable the flimsy looking thing is. If you are religious about the rules (raise ram a bit before moving turret), one will last a long time. Of course if you're not using the auto-index feature, it'll last forever....:D

so the one that I have that came with the press is a spare you are saying that there is one already in it.

Yes, that one is a spare; it comes wih one insalled.

Some of you guys must be gentler than I am--I figure the rachet wears out about every 5,000 rounds.

I have destroyed one on my LCT, mostly because I sometimes forget to raise the ram and try to turn the turret. I replaced it with the spare that came with the press, but I have about five more for when (not if) I destroy the next one.

I was just loading some 45 acp on mine last night and I thought my square ratchet was shot but I just replaced it not too long ago. Went remove the auto index clamp (black plastic thing that holds the ratchet) and noticed that the bolt that holds it together was loose. The more I looked at it I think the nut is missing. Is there a nut that inserts into it or does it just bolt into the plastic?

I hate to have to order a nut from Lee. If anyone knows what size etc. maybe I could pick on up at the hardware store.

No nut, just screws into the plastic and it don't take much to strip it. Some people have replaced it with a bit longer bolt of the same diameter and use a nut with good results. If I ever need one, that's the approach I'm gonna' take first.

D Manley that that was excellant advice!! I got a 2" 8/32 bolt with lock nut and washer. Press now runs like a brand new one.

If others are having problems with turret not completing cycle it may be that the bolt is loose as mine was. Square ratchet was not the cause this time.

I had a few issues and was very upset when I got mine years ago. The first ratchet was worn out in 3 months. I called and ordered 10 of them but come to find out wearing it out was my fault LOL. Anyway after about 20,000 rounds I still have 9 extra's sitting on my reloading bench. Meaning I have not had to replace any after I started changing out my heads with the ram in the raised position.
