like I said, it's been a long time since I shot one. what is it then and why does it hang out over the right side of the forend? (tha'ts the part my thumb finds awkward)

That's where the dust cover is enlarged to clear the charging handle extension, or whatever you'd call it.
The gas port is at the front of the stock, so you might occasionally get a little carbon out from under the gas cover, but most of it will come out the vents in the top and give ambidextrous gunsmoke distribution.
How about the Lightning bolt for the AK thinking of getting on for my Ak
The lightning bolt makes the AK harder to use by a lefty, not easier. It's really made for right-handers.
For me personally, I think the AK can be run fine even by a right-handed person with the charging handle in the stock location, using the left hand like you would with a Lightning Bolt; you just have to reach under the rifle to slap the handle. The main downside of the LB that I see is the open slot on the left side; the right-side slot can be covered with the safety to keep out dirt, but the left side slot is exposed. Well, that, and you can't really use the factory optics rail with it.
Ditto. You want a bone stock AK, or perhaps one with an extended safety lever, for a lefty. A lightning bolt will make it slower to manipulate for a lefty.
