My dad is looking for a new 9mm (sick of not being able to find .38 ammo), but is picky. No glocks, or XD's. I personally think he wants the heft of a steel or alloy frame. He's a leftie (throws right handed, writes and shoots left), and said he liked the total ambidextrous nature of my ruger, but wanted something else. What is out there that is ambidextrous with either a safety or decocker, and the mag release?

Best gun I can think of that matches that description would probably be a CZ-85.

All the goodness of the CZ-75 but with ambidextrous safety, slide stop, and reversible mag release button.

German police trade in HK P7 PSP. Around $600 and totally ambi.

The CZ-85B's mag catch is NOT reversible, It's a trigger or middle finger proposition for the left handed, like on a 1911.

Though as a lefty I prefer Berettas myself because the slide release is the least critical of the controls to have ambi, possibly the most lefty friendly pistols out there are the S&W M&P, the HK P2000, and HK P7M8, which are ambidextrous, or can be switched to totally left handed operation.

He like alot of other left handed folks are gonna have to learn to use his index finger for more things than pulling the trigger otherwise you're gonna end up with a compromise as far as what pistol you select. Everything from mag. releases to slide locks to Sig's decockers it'll be a world of difference once he adapts.

You can get an ambi-decocker-safety 9mm police-trade S&W 5904 (black-alloy) or 5906 (bright steel) from Cole Distributing in Scottsville KY for $325 to $375, once you figure shipping in. S&W mags hold 15 rounds, Mecgar aftermarket (Midway) hold 17.

I bought a 5904 from them, (good folks), and I think these ubiquitous 90's-era police-issue standards are really good autos. Ask around, check them out.

Rugers are ambi. I just got a p95 about a month ago. Runs great. Decocker/safety and mag release are ambi. Mark

If he could get around his dislike of polymer framed pistols, your dad could look at HK's wonderful P30. Even the slide release is on both sides of the pistol.

EAA's EZ9, HK LEM P-2000 or 2000sk

If $ or a budget are an issue, I'd look into the S&W Military and Police line(with the new ambi safety, ;)) or maybe the cheaper EAA EZ9 model.

If you have the $$$ look into the great HK P-2000 9mmNATO pistol or the compact P-2000sk. These duty weapons are in use by many US sworn LE agents and are a great buy for concealed use or protection. The HK P-2000 or P-30 models sport ambi features and can hold up to hard use. ;)

PS: good 9mmNATO loads are the Speer Gold Dot 124gr +P and the Winchester Ranger 127gr +P+. The Remington Golden Saber 124gr +P JHP load(bonded) is a great carry round too.

any DAO gun or any gun with an ambi safety. I'm a lefty and never found it an issue after I put an ambi on my 1911. My carry guns are all DAOs. Have him look at a Kahr K9. Steel and built like a Rolex!

I'm left handed and have found that most guns will work for me. The S&W MP line has some left handed features. The only guns that are issues for me are single actions that are designed to be carried cocked and locked and don't have an ambi safety.

+1 on the Walther P5, a flat-out fabulous handgun that can be obtained for less than $400 (German police trade-in) at SOG these days. The Walther P88 and P88C also fit the bill, although the price goes up considerably with that one. Still a great gun, however.
