I'm guessing H&K hasn't made an SA version of the MP5? That is generally defined as a machine pistol (so much so that that's what the "MP" stands for). That would be a fun gun to take to the range, and it shoots 9mm Para so it's cheap!

The bare bones Kel Tec PLR .223 is pretty small and handy. 9 inch barrel.

The AK pistol with 11 inch barrel is a big heavy piece of iron.

It was called the HK94 (the .308/7.62mm G3 semi was called the HK91, the .223/5.56mm HK33 semi was called the HK93). There was a pistol version (or, semi-auto MP5K) called the SP89. The ban pretty much ended all that.

You can find US-made post-ban equivalents to the '94, the best of which are probably by Vector Arms. Avoid any HK-lookalike made by Hesse or Vulcan.

Roma,

Maybe you should check on that. The barrel is shorter than a lot of pistols. It comes with a 10 round magazine, so capacity isn't the issue. Could it be the cartridge?

Just curious.

thank you.

I think it has to do with the length of the barrel...

I tried and was told by a very reputable store that they were not legal....

I have not pursued it since... I want one though. You're right though, fine weapon indeed!

I believe the problem for you is that these arms run afoul of the CT assault weapons ban, due to being a semi-auto pistol with a magazine that attaches outside the pistol grip.

You could get a 33rnd mag for a Glock.... ;)

I've been looking at the 'pistol' ARs, and they seem fun to shoot. I'm just not sure of how practical they are. The barrel length isn't long enough to accelerate 5.56mm at fragmenting speeds, which kind of defeats the purpose. Plus I like shoulder stocks, I'd probably just pay the 200usd and get an SBR (That is, if I didn't live in a state that forbids SBRs :p)

+ its 51 Oz, which is 1 oz over the CT legal limit for pistols ["Over 50 oz"]. Total BS. I hate this state; too bad I will not be moving before a Fed ban will probably axe these.

That SP89 is pretty sweet. Any ideas why there isn't a move towards something like that now the ban is over?

Very few people are willing to pay the $2k or so it ends up costing for one that's made decently.

Your choices in this area are pretty much one of the 125-or-so (good luck finding one) Vector V89s in 9mm, or the $3.75k+ HK SP-89s.

The only 'cheaper' choice is a crapshoot with a SW gun.

And frankly, if you're going to spend $2k+ on a 4.5 pound pistol that eats from $60 magazines, spend the $200 on the tax stamp and make it useful.
