I've been having a discussion with a friend about whether pistol ammo is legal for 18 year olds to buy. If you legally own a pistol at 18, can you get ammo legally?

In North Dakota you can, though the stores are misinformed and seem to believe otherwise. I never had a problem saying it was for a rifle at the till though.

In alot of states, those who are under 21 cannot buy pistol ammo. But as far as I know possession of pistol ammo and such isn't illegal. Unless there is a local law.

Being under 21 myself, I have found that the only place 'I' can buy pistol ammo w/o any questions is at Bass Pro Shop / Outdoor World. All ammo there can be purchased if your 18 or older. Prices of course are about $1-$2 bucks more... but who cares if I can pick up some range ammo myself.

Cyanide

P.S: I'm guessing that as long as your straight with the law (LEOs) and not doing anything stupid (read illegal - or something else illegal and have possession of gun &/or ammo) you should be in the clear.

Hm, well, the laws in question are the Virginia state laws. Does that help nail it down?

Federal law prohibits the sale of handgun ammunition to anyone under the age of 21 and any ammunition to anyone under the age of 18. The law specifically pertains to sales by FFL holders. I don't know about sales by nonlicensees.

Hm, interesting. So I can legally own a pistol at 18, but can't buy the ammo for it. But if I have a rifle in the same caliber, I can buy the ammo as it's also for a rifle.

Yes. So remember that Thompson you have when you need ammo for a 1911, and the Storm you just bought when you need ammo for your Glock. Need ammo for a .22 pistol? You have a 10/22, don't you?

Better yet, simply find non-licensed vendors at gunshows. That is what I do. Or, reload.

Back when I was 18 I used to always say that my 9mm ammo was for a 9mm AR15. It worked every singe time. And it was for a 9mm AR...and a Beretta, and a Sig P226.:)

I get this everytime I read up on IL gun laws.

Given the Marlin 1894C lever action in .357Mag and .38 special, M94's in .45 long colt, and Marlins and Rugers in 44Mag and .44 special, I'd guess there isn't much in the way of handgun ammo that doesn't have a rifle / carbine chambered for it.

Well, .25 and .32 acp maybe, but I didn't look.
