Professional LEO's do not enter into roadside debates... The roadside is the place where you are compliant and accomodate official requests and directives. Otherwise, you may find yourself riding the lightning and receiving a free ride to the grey bar hotel.

:barf:

You watch way too much tv. We have the burden of proof. Without it or word means nothing

Not true to my experience. When there isn't any physical proof, it comes down to word vs word.

I have specifically heard this from a judge.... "Well, it sounds like you have a good case, but when it comes down to it, I have to take his word over yours." Obviously this wasn't in front of the grand jury or anything, but it happened.

The cop in question was bold face lying. When I'm out and about, I avoid him (not all LEO's) at all cost.

Oddly enough, I had that narrowed down to one of two cops before I ever read the name.

It appears that we do live in two seperate worlds. When I interact W/ a cop there is a huge disparity of force in the cops favor, The cop has the gun ( or at least he gets to keep his), the cuffs , the tazer and the everpresent " Regardless of what happens to this peon I'm dealling W/ I'm going home tonight" attitude.

On my side I have my wits and my knowledge of my rights ( niether of which will really do a whole lot to protect me from a powerhungry/bad cop].

I actually agree W/ the above mentioned cop, ( keep up the good work, I'm sure it will end your career eventually) the side of the road isn't the place for debate the side of the road is where you hand over your papers ask for a lawyer and shut your mouth. You can't stop a bad cop from jacking you but you don't have to make it any easier for him.

I have a few observations.
First, good on the cop for being observant.
Second, good on the OP for not wigging out and handling it well. Same for cop.
Thirdly, the cop wasn't making idle conversation, he was assessing you and your current activities. He called backup before contact because he wasn't sure. Good for the cop.

However:
As soon as the cop determined the OP was just out for a jog, he should have broken contact with a friendly, "gotta go finish my rounds" or such.
The OP shouldn't have brought up a firearm unless specifically required by law in his state.

Finally, my experience and opinion is that most cops are decent folks trying to make a living. Sometimes, though, enthusiasm for a job or department policy causes pointless confrontation when they push just far enough to make some of us bristle. Not really bad intentions, just a differing of opinion about what constitutes "too far". The gross exceptions to this (on either side) don't have any bearing on this incident.

wow, coyotehitman, you seem to have a God complex. i think it is YOU who have the issues, and not Treo.

Some of y'all have been out in the sun with your tinfoil hats on again.

News flash: Cops may not have called for backup. He probably called dispatch to tell them he was parked somewhere talking to a citizen when the other cop came over to see what's up.

OR, the "backup" officer, who from the OP's original post knows the OP, knew the OP's jogging route and schedule, put 2 and 2 together and came over.

Really, some of paranoid exercisors of your rights are also your own worst enemies.

This really kills me:

I had less than a gram of pot on me and was smoking with a buddy on break in my parked car in the lot at work. As soon as we finished, the Narc Unit rolled up with lights on and arrested us.

1. You were in possession. Dope's illegal. Smoking dope in public is off the chart stupid anyway.

2. I'm calling BS. Most cops are too busy to check every car with someone smoking to see if it's dope or a cigarette. Either you or you buddy were already known to the cops as stoners or dealers or else you were doing somethign else to attract their attention.

I've heard a similar story before: Some guy told me he was just walking down the street, minding his own business with a joint, and the cops busted him. I later was able to glean from him that it was actually 2:00am, in an alley carrying a VCR, smoking a joint. Hmm, doesn't raise any suspicion at all, does it [/sarcasm]
