LEO's Using XD's?

Most LEAs issue sidearms and "approve" secondary guns for officers.

Couple days ago talked to an FBI SA on my floor wearing a Springfield 1911.

But they should list the agencies issuing the XD.

It's hard to compete against Glock with their market share and LE purchase program.

I like Springfield's 1911s best.

I think Springfield have one of the best customer service around. I broke the spring in my XD40 and they even refunded me the shipping cost I put up front. The turn around time was only a week.

I see a lot of them in LEO holsters around here, but it's mostly agencies that use the "buy off an approved list" approach. I don't think they're official agencywide issue.

In Kentucky I have seen some Sheriff officers with XD's. I think it was Jefferson County. Not positive on county because it was at the race track and they pull in officers from other counties for help. But can't mistake the hand grip safety.

Many Safariland duty holsters are already available for the XD.

I personally didn't care much for the .45 ACP XD grip, but it is usable and light years better than the fullsize Glock .45 ACP. My hands must be a little small, as I prefer the XD9, but I would take an XD45 and live with it if it were issued to me.

Small chance of that working for the Post Office:D

While the list may have been updated and changed since I saw one, I saw a list from Springfield last year of L/E agencies issuing/approving XD pistols.

There were 22 US & US territory L/E agencies listed as issuing XD pistols, and 7 agencies listed as approving them for duty use.

Wouldn't be surprised if there have been some additions to both categories since last year ...

Also, I wouldn't be at all surprised to hear that agencies which may approve/authorize optional purchase and service use wouldn't necessarily think to call and inform Springfield Armory, either. Not if the individual officer were doing the purchasing. Ditto for authorized use as off-duty weapons, too.

I think the .45 ACP chambering in the XD might attract some additional interest, as well as the use of the Melonite hardening treatment (molten salt bath ferritic nitrocarburizing), especially if adopted on the 9mm and .40 S&W models.

cz75bdneos22,

I have seen them at Carter's Country for 489.00, I think Academy had one for 495.00. I was at a gunstore in Giddings last week and I think they had a price of 495.00....but dont hold me to it. I got the last one at Dons Gun Store in Victoria. I have been doing business with him for over 15 years. His sticker on the gun was 550.00 and he told the sales clerk to give it to me for 479.00 +TTL. I believe he has some more on order.

The XD is just as good as the Glock. The Glock has a marketing edge going for it nothing more. The Glock is no longer anything special now that other companies have been able to make reliable and tough plastic autos. The XD main edge over the Glock is the very slim and comfortable grip.

Hard to answer the "accuracy" question without shooting more exemplars from the XD line ...

I've only handled and fired a couple of standard XD's, one each in 9mm and .40 S&W ... and only the .40 S&W for any length of time over the course of a few range sessions.

Both seemed to be acceptably accurate, although the cocked SA trigger doesn't feel like a cocked SA trigger. Similar to a Glock, and not as good as a S&W TDA or Walther AS when either is cocked in SA mode, or even most SIGARMS pistols cocked in SA mode, for that matter.

Decent ergonomics. A bit muzzle heavy, although not badly balanced. Not as much muzzle rise as with the Glock .40's, or the 99 series, for that matter ... and that might initially affect some POA/POI elevation issues for some folks, especially if they were accustomed to shooting a polymer-framed pistol with less 'muzzle heft'. Dunno. You know how variable different shooter's performance and reactions can be when some factors are introduced ...

I seemed to find it a bit easier to do well when it came to consistent potential accuracy than some of the other folks that tried the .40 S&W model. I have no idea what that means ... if anything.

There are some potential good features and benefits on the XD model line, but there are some things that I'd like to watch how they do, too, as the line is probably adopted/approved by more L/E users and owners in the coming years.

I'd be more tempted to try one if they were priced under $400 (and closer to $300), and I could attend one of their armorer's classes to get some further insight into the design and platform now that Springfield is importing it.

A few smaller Dept's around here have the XD .40 and .45 on their authorized lists. One dept issues the XD45 or the Ruger P90. I think that makes about 5 boro's all together. Most of the larger Depts around here are still Glock-exclusive though.

I think the XD is as accurate as a Glock in 9mm in my experience. I still don't think most police departments have or will issue them due to the reasons in my ealier posts, plus the "cocked" striker system. If Springfield were to address those problems, then maybe, and perhaps even the "cocked" striker thing can be overlooked.
