Lets hear your favorite jhp brand and weight

Federal HST's and CORBON (sierra hp's, not the powerball) are my favorites, here's why:

these brands always expand consistently in ballistic tests, even through clothing, and with standard pressure (HST's only, corbons are all +P)

i know gold dot's are popular, but i have seen too many tests where GD's did not expand at all through clothing, or very little through bare ballistic gelatin. for this reason i would never use them. not sure why GD's are so popular.

i prefer the light weight jhp's because they penetrate less, and here's why:

the more penetration a jhp has the more energy it takes with it when it leaves the target. as apposed to dumping more of it's energy INTO the target-which is more affective.

law enforcement uses heavier jhp's because they often encounter situations where the added penetration is needed, but it is often at the cost of loosing some effectiveness.

165 grn 40 cal jhp's are more affective than 180 grn, and 115 9mm jhp's are usually more affective stoppers than the 147 grn's for this reason.

many people nowadays use the heavier jhp's, under the false impression that heavier is better, it's all about the energy delivered into the target.

lets hear some more favorites, and why.:)

I will say that I have limited experience with JHP's, but I would completely agree on the Federal HST's (I carry 147gr, standard pressure).

One of my friends used to carry +P Gold Dots in 9mm...then one day a crazy rottweiler attacked him and he had to pull his piece and shoot. Luckily, it scared the dog off but the dog lived (it was hit twice center of mass) :what:

They later found the Gold Dots in the sidewalk where the dog was shot, neither bullet expanded until after they exited the dog.

He's carried Federal HST's since then...

neither bullet expanded until after they exited the dog.
But see, everyone wants bullets that meet the FBI 18" standard.

But dogs, and most humans, just ain't that thick.

And you can't have it both ways with a lot of calibers.

civilian don't need 18" of penetration, you want to minimize the chance that the bullet will exit the bad guy and maybe hit an innocent person

Wow, last time I read anything on the subject it was only 12" minimum. Average BGs are getting bigger it seems.

Hornady XTP 185 gr @ 1175 fps (+P) .45 acp. They feed flawlessly and are accurate as heck. I like Cor-bons but the price limits practice, and I really like to practice. :D

I am an old fan of Winchester Silvertips, in just about every caliber in the house. They are reliable for me, and consistent.

Neither the best nor the worst (depending on the bias of the results) in the publications, but, consistent for me.

Others' differ.

.45 = 230 gr Federal Hydrashock
9mm = 115 gr Winchester Silver Tip
.357 mag = 158gr Federal Hydrashock
.44 mag = 300 gr Prvi Partizan SJSP (this is my woods gun and its loaded for bear.)

Definitely, there is no FAVORITE. I have found over the years, as many others have, that each gun is different and does better with different ammunition. For me; of the 4 guns I use to carry/self/home defense; the verdict is:

S&W Model 13: 357 magnum; Federal 158 grain Hydra-Shok
SigSauer P220: 45acp; Remington 230 grain golden saber
FEG AP-MBP: 32acp; Fiocchi 60 grain JHP
CZ-82 (just bought): 9mm Makarov; Haven't tried yet, but told Hornady 95 grain XTP

Winchester LE Bonded and Federal HST's

The FBI Standard has not changed it is still 12" of penetration..

In my .45's I have Winchester Ranger 230gr Bonded or Ranger 230gr SXT's. In my .40's Winchester Ranger 180gr Bonded. In my 9mm's Winchester Ranger 147gr +P Bonded and Federal 147gr +P HST's. Speer Gold Duty Ammo has an Excellent Reputation in real life use with LE. It is Bonded Ammo and apparently it over penetrated the Rottweiler. My only real life experience with a non-human. Was back when I was undercover LE. We were about to take down what turned out to be a group of very heavily armed drug dealers. Turns out they had a Doberman trained to eat people like me:( The dog was to guard and alert them if someone approached the house. I ended up shooting and killing the Doberman as it charged me. That was one shot of Remington 158gr .357 Mag Ammo. Before anyone jumps on me for cruelty to animals, please note this was in the line of duty and a life threating situation:( I Love dogs:) I own a Black German Shepherd and a Full Blooded Black Lab. I will not even go Hunting, because I cannot kill a defenseless animal [I am NOT Morally against hunting, it is just something I cannot do]

The Best to All!

Frank

For all below: reliability, high velocity, muzzle energy & one-shot-stop percentages...

9mm +P = Speer Gold Dot, 124gr = 1,220, 410, & 88
40S&W = Speer Gold Dot, 155gr = 1,200, 496 & 93
357SIG = Speer Gold Dot, 125gr = 1,350, 506 & 91

i have federal +P+ 115 grn jhp's law enforcement ammo and winchester ranger 115 +P+ in my glock 19.

these are good choices too, i actually prefer the federal over the rangers because they expand better in ballistic test than the rangers, and have a higher muzzle velocity and therefore deliver more energy in to the target.

Cor-bon 125gr.Hp's in 357mag.as of right now.I may go with 158gr-er's when I retire my current carry ammo soon.Going to depend on how they shoot for me.

200gr Gold dots. I havent found a more reliable expander yet in my redneck backyard testing. Through two layers of denim they expand perfectly. Over about 8.5 grains of power pistol they are really nice.
