What exactly is the range limit on hunting with a 12ga slug? Might be the answer to a question I've been dreading asking - I don't wanna spring for a new hunting rifle. Mostly interested in using it for deer. Elk too, if that's a possibility.
The slugs are pretty impressive in performance. Taking grizzlys would be no problem if you chose to use them. Here is some info I found
The 12 gauge slug weighs in at 385 grains while the 20 gauge slug weighs in at 260 grains. The 2 ¾ inch shells produce 1850 feet per second while the 3 inch shells produce 1900 feet per second. The 2 ¾ inch 12 gauge slug generates almost 3000 foot pounds of energy at the muzzle and carries over 1700 foot pounds of energy at the 100 yard mark.
AccuTip Bonded Sabot Slug
Gauge Length Slug Wt. Muzzle Velocity
12 ga 2 ¾” 385 gr 1850 fps
12 ga 3” 385 gr 1900 fps
20 ga 2 ¾” 260 gr 1850 fps
20 ga 3” 260 gr 1900 fps
I couldn't find a remington chart (the remington accutip shoots slightly tighter, flatter, farther and hits harder) but here is the close comparrison Hornady chart for you:

Velocity (fps) / Energy (ft-lbs)
Muzzle 50 100 150 200
2000/2664 1816/2196 1641/1793 1482/1463 1341/1198
Trajectory (inches)
Muzzle 50 100 150 200
-1.50 2.40 2.70 -6.70
It's only natural that the proven performance of Hornady's SST bullet enter the world of shotgun
If you are looking at 1000ft/lbs of energy for deer the slug would be good to about 200yds. The accuracy from the two listed above is excellent. F&S gave the nod to the Accutip for accuracy when the tested them a year or so ago. They were shooting almost moa with them.
