mossberg maverick 88 12ga
24" fully rifled barrel

Mossberg 500 with a Redhead scope. Don't know all the particulars about it. Picked it up from a co-worker years ago and I use Hornaday SST 300grain @2000FPS sabots that group extremely well.

Here is a pic of a 3 shot group after sighting it in. Only 3 shots because I could not endure the agony of 2 more. I figure the guns recoil won't be as bad while wearing a coat and thicker clothes. Definitly have to watch out for the scope during recoil. I take as much eye relief as possible and still see through the scope.

good looking set-up dusty. looks surprisingly similar to one of the guys i hunt with. nice group too!

I bought the gun for $200 and it took me several hours to clean it up. The guy had duck taped a sling to the stock and had some scratches on the barrel. I reblued the scratches and steel wooled the stock and got all the glue from the tape off. It shoots very nicely but the Hornaday is a punishing load. It is good to go out to 150yds.

JEB, good call on the thread. I've got a Maverick 88. How's it work out as a slug gun?

What exactly is the range limit on hunting with a 12ga slug? Might be the answer to a question I've been dreading asking - I don't wanna spring for a new hunting rifle. :p Mostly interested in using it for deer. Elk too, if that's a possibility.

Also, I recall reading up about slugs somewhere fairly recently. Something about some types of slugs can only be fired out of certain shotgun barrels, and you need to be careful about matching them up?

thanks bobson!

the maverick does all right with slugs. i have never gone out and tried a bunch of diffferent brands to see what it shot best because i just cant afford it; and if it turned out to like some kind of sabot slug best....then id really be broke. for now im using brenneke K.O.'s and accuracy is pretty good. they dirty up the bore a bit, but not enough to decrease accuracy.

i think there is a certain amount of play in the barrel between shots, and since the scope is mounted to the reciever, this may account for some of the occasional flyers (cant say for sure, im just guessing). if i were to pick out a shotgun for slugs only, i think it would be an 870 with a fully rifled cantaliever (sp?) barrel.

i would say about 100-150 yards for slugs. i have never hunted elk before, but from the damage i have seen done to deer, i dont see why it would be a problem.

as a rule of thumb you shoot rifled slugs from a smooth barrel and sabot slugs from a rifled barrel. when i started hunting i used the cheap winchester super-x value pack slugs in my rifled barrel. accuracy wasnt bad, but there was quite a bit of lead to scrub out at the end of the day.

The slugs are pretty impressive in performance. Taking grizzlys would be no problem if you chose to use them. Here is some info I found

The 12 gauge slug weighs in at 385 grains while the 20 gauge slug weighs in at 260 grains. The 2 ¾ inch shells produce 1850 feet per second while the 3 inch shells produce 1900 feet per second. The 2 ¾ inch 12 gauge slug generates almost 3000 foot pounds of energy at the muzzle and carries over 1700 foot pounds of energy at the 100 yard mark.

AccuTip Bonded Sabot Slug
Gauge Length Slug Wt. Muzzle Velocity
12 ga 2 ¾” 385 gr 1850 fps
12 ga 3” 385 gr 1900 fps
20 ga 2 ¾” 260 gr 1850 fps
20 ga 3” 260 gr 1900 fps

I couldn't find a remington chart (the remington accutip shoots slightly tighter, flatter, farther and hits harder) but here is the close comparrison Hornady chart for you:

http://www.hornady.com/store/12-ga-Slug-300-gr-FTX/

Velocity (fps) / Energy (ft-lbs)
Muzzle 50 100 150 200
2000/2664 1816/2196 1641/1793 1482/1463 1341/1198

Trajectory (inches)
Muzzle 50 100 150 200
-1.50 2.40 2.70 -6.70
It's only natural that the proven performance of Hornady's SST bullet enter the world of shotgun

If you are looking at 1000ft/lbs of energy for deer the slug would be good to about 200yds. The accuracy from the two listed above is excellent. F&S gave the nod to the Accutip for accuracy when the tested them a year or so ago. They were shooting almost moa with them.

update: turns out my problem wasnt play in the barrel, it was leading from the K.O.'s. once i broke it down for a good cleaning i ended up scrubbing FLAKES of lead out of the bore. dont know how i missed that before. switched to some federal sabots and accuracy improved GREATLY! four shots just under an inch at 100 yards. just had to find what ammo my gun liked.

Bump -- I'd be interested in seeing what everyone else is using as well. Planning to add a rifled slug barrel to my BPS for next year or just buy another setup of some kind for slugs.

I use a Rem. 1100 20 gauge with a hasting slug barrel shooting win. partition gold slugs.
Shoots accurately out to a hundred yards.

Using an American made H&R Tracker II .20 this year. I didn't have a slug gun, my first deer gun was a smoothbore, then I used a handgun last year. Found the H&R in a shop last year right after season ended for $120.00, couldn't pass that up!

I am glad I live in Texas where we dont have a use for slug guns, maybe in the piney woods of east Texas. other than that we need some long range shooters. the kind I like.

Slug Gun

Here's My Remington 870 with a Hastings 20" rifled barrel and a Simmons Pro Diamond 2X shotgun scope . I use 2 3/4" Remington Copper Solids. Just restocked it this year with a Mossy Oak Syn Buttstock and A Skyline Extreme Syn fore end ( Bought seperately on EBAY for a total of $42 shipped ). Bought the shotgun new in 1993, got the Hastings barrel and scope the same day. Shot alot of deer with this set up but the stock was getting pretty beat up from rain, snow all those deer seasons so i replaced it....WVleo

I figured it was, I was just teasing (note the smiley). Typically when people see them still in sporterized condition they are factory stock and non-922r compliant.
It's destined for conversion, but not until I sell my mossberg. I've also got a 12ga pump that also makes a fairly decent slug gun:
