Well, nothing better unless it's got a scout scope attached :)

For a brush gun where you might encounter bear or other nasty business, I'm hard pressed to think of a gun that is equally light, compact, has a comparable rate of fire in the right hands, while packing an adequate punch to stop an angry beast NOW.

CZ 550s certainly back a bigger wallop with the bigger calibers available, but most have much longer barrels and the bolt is usually not as fast as the lever for people to operate.

Well my Lithgow manufactured Lee Enfield converted to 45-70 by Gibbs is a rifle I don't mind owning and shooting.
But yours are O.K. too:D
Nice rifles you fellows have!

Not all of us like the same thing. And not all hunting situations call for the same caliber rifle. I personally like the Howa/Hogue in .308 for most of my shooting. But then a .223 would do better for varmints and small game. Then there is the Remington 700 chambered in .375 H&H Magnum for African game. All good guns. :D

Ah yes the 45-70 model 95 Marlin Guide gun. After I worked on my nieghbors rifle all night, it was almost as smooth and reliable as my 1886 Winchester.

My Fave

45/70 is my go to gun, there is nothing I would not engage with my 45/70 game wise that is, best all round gun I own.

PremiumSauces my first one was a ported gun
it was God alful loud. It was one of the frist run ones. Ihad one of the CB ones as well. It was ok but the barrel heated up bad and changed the point of impact. Look and feel was great first two of three shots were fine but after that it got to moving around.

for hunting what? Where? under what conditions? By whom? At what distance? Your post seems to lack some detail.

jbech123 for hunting eny thing enywhere. And if you need range a nice Sharps would do. Look at Garret Ammo case in point.

I just got in my new NEI bullet mold. 460gr with a nose area of .35 and bullet dia of .460. can't wait to size and gas check some and kill some pingers(steel plates). Should be marginal for deer:D.

There can't be a better gun made for hunting than the Marlin 1895 GS in 45-70!!!!!!!!
OH? Why not? I can think of several that might be better.

I'd agree with the premise. After acquiring a Guide Gun a few years ago and hunting with it I can't imagine a more perfect hunting rifle. Most of my previous hunting was done with bolts and single shots.

Sure there are better long range shooters but what can be more fun than stalking within the range of your GG and launching nearly one ounce of lead right where it goes? Top that off with terminal performance... in an easy to carry and rugged package... man that is livin' good.

I think 1895 guide guns are junk . . . now, if one of you would sell me one, I could quit looking (especially since I've had dies, brass, and bullets for a year . . . ).

O.K. O.K. what about a converted Lee Enfield in 45-90? If 70 is very good then 90 must be very great:D. Thinking about doing that to a receiver that I have laying around.
Never have shot any of the Marlin's in 45-70. But I bet they would just be a hoot.
