Recently picked up a 6x18x40 Shepherd scope at a gun show in VA that will be going on my Browning A-Bolt II .308 varmint rifle. I've narrowed down the ring choices to either Leupold QRW or Warne Maxima quick release rings (sitting on Weaver style two piece bases).

First off, is there any particular benefit (ie: strength, ease of setup, whatever) in going with a vertical ring split like the Warne's, or staying with the more traditional horizontal ring split like the Leupold's?

Second, what would be the best ring height for my Shepherd 40mm AO scope? The Leupold site is listing low rings for Leupold 1" 40mm scopes on a Browning A-Bolt. Is it a safe assumption that the AO diameter of my Shepherd is very close/same as a Leupold AO? Anyone know if the Warne low rings are the same height as the Leupold's?

Price-wise it's a toss-up, only @ $10 or so difference between Leupold or Warne ring/base sets.

Thanks in advance for any thoughts.

I don't have the Warne to compare, but I think that the low Warne is higher than the low Leupold.

I am in love with the Leupolds and have put them in several of my rifles, about a year ago I wanted to try out the Maxima, but I never could find them in stock the three times that I ordered.

I have rifles that have three scopes, for quick shooting, for medium range and for extremelly long range. each of those scopes is mounted on Leupold QDW rings and go back to zero perfectly.

Here is a picture of two of my scopes with such rings.
