Went driving around to gun shops yesterday just to get a feel for what's going on. I made two stops in Pekin, IL.

Dave's Trading Post was my first stop - they're always heavy on reloading components and I was looking for some BOOLITS.

My old friend Dave was picked clean. Shotgun primers out the wazoo, but no others. The powder shelves were almost empty, a few cans of Titewad and other shotshell powders that bore no interest to me. He had two lonely cans of IMR4064 and one can of AA4064 marked at about $20 a can - I liberated the 2 lbs of IMR4064 for some 7.5 swiss reloading. Normally he's got several hundred pounds of powder in stock; at this point, maybe has 30 pounds.

Bullets? Man slim pickings. There were NO 223 or 308 or 45 or any other common caliber in jacketed form, although he still had a (substantially smaller than before) pile of lead cast bullets; maybe 30,000 or so (normally has a LOT more). The only thing plentiful that I was interested in, he'd recently picked up a whole mess of 7mm projectiles (140gr spitzer), about 4,000 of them, at an estate sale, and had a really good price on them (15/box). I picked up some. Whoever passed away must have really loved 7mm!

Handgun cabinets still had a few revolvers and maybe two dozen semi-autos. I was really surprised to see the revolvers so heavily depleted. Very few small frame autos.

Rifle / shotgun rack was bare of anything resembling a "military style weapon". Not even any old C&R pieces to perk my interest. Several dozen new bolt actions and shotguns.

Ammo was thin. He had about 10 boxes of Tula 223 behind the counter, 8.98/20. But mostly what was left was odd calibers. I did pick up a couple of boxes of 357 mag for my Ruger SP101, price was a touch high but I grabbed some .357 BOOLITS with the intention of making the most out of the spent brass. :)

Helped him with a computer problem, checked out, and headed down the road to Pekin Gun.

Pekin Gun, by far, usually has the widest selection of firearms in this region, putting big stores to shame. They had thousands of guns last November when I was in there. But the shelves on the right, where the EBR's normally reside, were picked clean. There was a couple of older items; believe I saw an M1A, a couple garands, etc. But the prices weren't compelling.

They were picked clean of ALL "high cap" handguns, except for a big shipment of Glocks that arrived yesterday morning (approx 2 dozen in the cabinet). Prices on the Glocks were very reasonable. They also had dozens of 1911's, including some higher end pieces that I started drooling over before I checked myself.

They still had a lonely BAR semi auto replica, priced over 4K. I'd been eyeballing it for awhile, being an avid WWII collector, but that price tag .. ugh. I just can't stomach paying over 4K for what amounts to a really heavy 30-06 rifle. It's been sitting on their shelf for well over a year. At that price it'll probably be there another year. ;)

Reloading components at this store were picked clean, they did have a decently large supply of handgun ammo, about 30 cases or so. I was there to check on consignments though, and didn't ask what the price was (cases were not marked with a price tag.)

I asked about consignments, and was told they are NOT taking any at this time. That's a 110% reversal of normal process. Not sure why, and they didn't offer any explanation. I speculated that maybe they don't want to have merchandise in their store with high price tags; they're still selling everything that comes in with a standard (reasonable) markup.

Anyway, that's the two that I checked on. Not inspiring, there's just not a lot out there to buy.

In the end, I'm glad I shoot a wide range of calibers, it really helps at times like this when the "common" stuff is all dried up or prohibitively expensive.

I'm in your area, and have had the same luck as you. I just started reloading this last fall, and have just about ran through my initial supply. I need small pistol primers and have called just about everywhere local. Someone told me to call Dave's because they are usually stocked up, but they said they were out of just about everything. I don't even want to go into Pekin gun any time soon. Last time I was in there you couldn't even get up to the counter to look at anything. Good thing I haven't been able to shoot much lately.

In my area, South Central Texas, I visited my LGS last week. First time I have been there since before the events in December. Plenty of ARs, lower receivers, etc, but with a price. Lowers were triple the price, ARs double. Few AKs were available, again though price. Hi-cap mags were readily availabe, but again, price. Plenty of handguns. They recently got in loads of ammo, including the popular calibers, but you had to pay. I bought some CCI Mini-mags, because I was looking for .22LR. I overpaid, but I needed some. Most people were looking at ammo while I was there. Didn't see any of the ARs move from their racks.

People are even buying out hunting calibers in my area. They are even clearing out the cleaning supplies.

jpalusk, send me a PM with your contact info. I've got small pistol primers stashed away, and work over in Tremont. We could meet up some night if you want to buy a 1k brick for $30. That should get you by until they become more widely available again.

PM sent. That is a very gracious offer and I appreciate it very much. Hopefully sometime I will be able to return the favor.

I set foot in Pekin Gun for the first time a couple weeks ago. I wish it wouldn't have taken me so long to do so. Very nice shop with friendly staff. Picked up a transfer from Bud's and a box of 9mm. They'll definitely get more of my businesses after this panic dies down.

JFtheGR8; Yeah Pekin Gun has been a mainstay of the area for a long time. Sad the owner has terminal cancer. I've been doing business with Dave since I first started shooting. His son seems to be doing a knock out job keeping things going, though. Dan (his son) is a straight shooter, won't screw you over.

While you're in that area, if you reload, make sure you drop by Dave's trading post (just a few blocks up Derby). If it weren't for the panic going on, he's got the best prices on reloading components anywhere in this region. Nice guy too. Tell him you know Trent. He'll probably tell you a story or two about me. :)

jpalusk; no biggie man. I've been hoarding for 20 frigging years, have some to spare, and will always help another local shooter out in times like this.

I don't reload... Yet that is. After this panic dies down I will look into reloading 9mm and 45acp. Maybe even .223 for the m4gery. Thanks for the info.

Well, if you want any help getting started, just lemme know. I've been reloading all of those for over 15 years.

Well with ammo the way it is some hunting calibers are cheaper to shoot than an AR and all the new AR owners need to be able to clean their rifle. Though they probably cant find enough ammo to justify cleaning it. :D

Pekin gun has at least been getting primers trickling in. I picked up 2k large rifle last week and 1k large pistol. Dave has been out for weeks.
I'm trying to slack off a little. Can't shoot my last 1500 rounds of 45acp or 22lr till I know I can get ahold of more.

Need to get my hands on some small rifle primers for my grandpa.

I've got small rifle primers set back too. Will sell 1K to you for $30 (last price I paid for them, not counting sales tax). I have military small rifle, commercial small rifle, and benchrest small rifle (your pick, you only get one).

PM me with your info, if you're interested. I'm not doing this to make money, I'm breaking even or losing money on time and gas spent meeting people. BUT, I've hoarded for times like this, and have more than I'll use.

FYI PG had a shipment of 22lr today. Only CCI std velocity, and limit one brick per person.

The only thing I'm still looking for is 5.7x28. Been trying to get my hands on some for over a year. (!!!!)

Pekin gun got a couple cases of Remington Thunderduds in just before closing time today. Farm&Fleet had some too. Presley's has been getting a trickle of Blazer bricks in too.

I know this is an old thread, but FYI Dave's in Pekin got more powder in yesterday and LR primers.

Powders I noticed
Green dot
Red dot
Bullseye
W231
H4895
Triple7
Clays 1# and 8#
Int. Clays 8#

After I left he was several pounds of Bullseye and W231 lighter! :D

OOOH crap I wish I would have seen this earlier when I was in town. Would have snagged a couple cans of 4895. Not burning $15 in gas to drive back to Pekin tho. :(

EDIT: Heard Pekin Gun got a load of ammo in; rationing applies (daily limits on 45ACP is 250rds I think?)

Trent, you're right on all counts. PG has ammo. Limit one box of 22lr (not brick) and 5 boxes 45acp. If they still have some tomorrow I may pick up some more 45. Never hurts to have a few boxes of factory loads around.

Daniel has been pretty good about posting on facebook when they receive stuff. Makes me happy I have a smart phone.

How are their prices? Are they scalping or just doing a (reasonable, all things considered) markup?

Both Dave an PG are still pretty reasonable. Bullseye was the same price it was when I last bought some. (2-3 months) I don't really buy much factory ammo other than 22lr. 45acp was $23/ box I think. Pretty normal. Don't know about the 22. I wasn't interested in 50 counts.
Hope to find some better prices on some more 45acp brass and some Varget.

Oh jeez dude, give me a call about that 45 brass. I've got a ton of 1x. More than I'm realistically going to shoot through in my life.

Dave @ Dave's Tradin Post in Pekin just called me.

He has a shipment of *110* AR-15 lowers on the way. :)

Unfortunately, price from the manufacturer is steeper, they'll probably hit the shelves somewhere around $200. Not sure of brand, they are (according to him) all milspec Aluminum, though.

You can do a little better than that. Ohio Ordnance sells their receiver kits for about $2,100, but you have to get on the waiting list, since they produce these in batches. While you're waiting, try to find a parts kit. They occasionally turn up on GunBroker and elsewhere. Assembling the gun is fairly easy. I've built two of these in the past year.
