I'm looking for a light for my 12ga Winchester Defender. I'm not LE or a soldier, just looking for a bright light, with a sturdy mount, remote switch for the forearm, that is reasonably priced. I've looked in the catalogs and online, and would appreciate any experience from the members as to what they would recommend and what to stay away from.

Thanks for your replies.

If you were LE or military, then taxpayer $$$ would buy your gear and you wouldn't have to spend your own. Of course, a lot of this sort of gear is priced as if someone were spending OPM (other peoples' money) to buy it... .

Number one thing I hate about most 'reasonably priced' light outfits for pumpguns is the stupid curly cords they use for the pressure switch. I don't like dangly bits on working guns, and my #1 dislike is curly cords for pressure switches. If you like'em tho, go for it wide open... .

Next thing I dislike is having the light on the gun in some fashion where it requires removing hardware to get rid of the light if it isn't needed. For something so simple I don't want to have to have a toolkit around. Snap on/ snap off works for me, that way i can run the gun in daylight for practice without beating up the light. Lotso folks tell me all time I should buy a GOOD light like a SureFire and then not have to WORRY so much about beating up light in practice that way.

Well, guess what SureFire says:

Housing Plug
To extend the lamp and battery life of your SureFire Integrated Forend Shotgun WeaponLight, SureFire suggests removing the bezel and body assembly during extended daylight live-fire practice. The Housing Plug screws into the Shotgun WeaponLight housing to prevent dirt or other contaminants from entering the empty battery cavity.

Shotguns recoil a bunch and are hard on anything attached to them, sometimes including shooters. I'd much rather be able to easily take off the light when I don't really need it than beat it up unnecessarily with daylight live fire practice no matter what quality or cost the gear is is. BTW, I have SureFire fore-ends on several 870s and on my Benelli M1S90. They work fine, I don't like them on 870s much because the light housing takes up so much hand room on the fore-end there's little room for a good grip with the weak hand. One more thing to think about... .

What I wound up using are Streamlight M3s. They fit a standard type mount which is available for and installs easily on shotguns, carbines and comes from the factory on pistols made with light rails. Around here we use them on Glock 19s, AR-15s and 870s. Were I doing it over again I would spend the extra and get M3Xs (with shock suppression system) for the shotguns, but they weren't on the market when i bought so we will wear out what we have before buying something different.

M3s are about $120, the M3X is about $160. Mounts are about $15 for most shotguns.

I would like to see a reasonably simple and reasonably inexpensive LED combat light that was easily mountable and detachable. New generation LEDs put out plenty of light for interior goblin control and are about as shock resistant as any light source available. They are easy on batteries too. I don't doubt that something like this is in the works, if not already available. The state of the art is after all a constantly moving target. No doubt other developments which are perfectly suitable have been adopted by others at an even lower cost- please chime in if you have such a setup.

I agree 100% with Lee.

I’ve got a couple of the Insight M3s for handguns, and a M3X for my Benelli M1S90. It’s easy to swap them between guns and take them off for daytime practice. There’s no sense in beating a light up if you don’t have to.

The M3X is plenty bright enough for HD use, and at $160 or so a pretty good value. I bought my M3s for less than $100 per, just do a search for them. I have mine mounted using the Insight mount, just forward of the forearm, so I can reach the switch with my finger. I used this set up for some nocturnal beaver eradication earlier this year and it worked very well. The light held up and had plenty of range for the task at hand.

I've got the forend light replacement from Surefire and really love it. I've had it for a few years now and it's been on during some healthy exercises during that time. Survived a lot of shooting and a few backpacking trips, which is my standard 'should I trust this equipment' test. Anyway, it's never had a problem and still works great. Maybe the weight out front might irritate some people, understandably. If it's an HD gun, then this may be less of a concern, aside from difference in handling characteristics.

I don't have any experience with the M3s but don't recall ever having heard a bad thing about them. One nice thing about the Surefire forearm light is the built in ribbon switch for a 'momentary on'. I'm not sure whether or not this is possible on the M3 without changing your grip on the weapon to get to the light (it may very well be quite easy to manage this with the M3 though, I've no idea).

If you settle on a Surefire, there's some nice prices to be had from Wild West in Alaska.

Personally, however, I've never been comfortable with the concept of pointing a loaded weapon at <whatever> I'm wanting to illuminate.

I have lights and I have firearms but they can be aimed independently.

Thanks alot for the information guys, I appreciate your taking the time.
I'm headed off to one of the bigger fun shows tomorrow with a few bucks and see what I can find.

Update, I ordered the M3X with 12 gauge mount and a AR mount for my lightweight AR15. Should fit on my Ruger PR345 with rail as well. Thanks for your imput and advice. Got the package for $157.00 plus shipping.

Surefire 6P, 120 lumen bulb, shock resistant bezel, aftermarket pressure switch and mount. The clamp on barrel mount does work but I like the Cavalry arms adaptor that converts the back end to take AR-15 furniture and has a picatinny rail on top. This allows a collapsable stock and you can put one of those side mounts on the rail and hang a laser and a light off of it and not interfere with your EOTech. :)

I ordered it from Midway with FFL dealer pricing.

Sounds like a nice set up mrmeval, but that's just a bit more than I wanted to get into. Thanks for the reply.
