After some consideration I plunked down some dough on a 556r 7.62x39 Sig Sauer. Here are my impressions. I bought my first milled Bulgarian kalash style rifle in 1997 or thereabouts and have owned about a dozen different variants since then. How does the Sig stack up? Pretty well. The thing which helps the most is the solid top rail for mounting scopes. This is secured with three machine screws, which I took out, applied thread locker to and retorqued to 35 in. Lbs. The trigger is different than about anything I have tried, but it is strangely predictable. It is a two stage of sorts. With the rings and scope I am using on this one cheek weld, eye relief are perfect. Accuracy is slightly better than most AKs but you will find an occasional Bulgy which will hold its own against these. With federal soft point brass case ammo, this particular unit is giving 2.5 MOA accuracy at 200 yds. and 100% reliability. This is deer, hog and coyote accuracy to this range for sure, prairie dog? Maybe not so much. .Zombies lurking in a 3 gun stage? Oh yeah!!
Rapid fire with these in semi auto is at least as fast as an AK in 7.62 and I think faster. If you want an AK to run this fast I would go with a 74 in 5.45 with the brake. I would also run an Ace sidefolder adjusted up to lower the bore in relation to the shoulder which would help bring recoil straight back and reduce muzzle climb.
The Sig is serious fun no doubt about it. Should you buy one? Well, if you are trying to decide between the Sig and the high end AK, I would say if you are dead set on optics for the rifle get the Sig. If you are just fine with open sights then get the AK, throw a sling on it and get to shooting IMAG0429_zps06308bc8.gif

I sure like mine. Haven't had it very long. It has a Vortex
Strikefire on it. I do prefer shooting it over my other Ak's.
They are Norinco and Poly Tech. I still need to find a front
site. Have heard that Samson makes one that will work.

The factory Sig front sight will only work with the Sig Diopter rear sight due to the unique heights of the two parts.

I went with a Midwest industries front sight on mine (Sampson works as well) so I could use a standard AR15 rear sight. I installed a Troy folding rear sight on my 556R. in my opinion, this is the one failing in the Sig design as they should have used AR compatible sights or at least had the rail and the gas block index on the same plane.

I topped mine with a Trijicon optic and like you, have had 100% reliability with the rifle. My round count is approaching 1,000 so far. It's a fantastic shooter and one of my favorites.

I highly recommend the Krebs extended safety selector and the Manticore POST charging handle. Both are user installable upgrades that really improve the rifle's handling characteristics.

Keep shooting.

They had more than one model front sight listed when I ordered mine. I think the one for the rear diopter is a better option but I really didn't like the price of the rear diopter given how poorly these old eyeballs are doing with iron sights these days :(

I believe the sight I ordered came with the 5.56 model that had an AR-like collapsible stock and had the same flip-up rear embedded at the rear of the top rail as does the 556R. This model may have been discontinued as I've not seen one in a good while.

The 556R is a nice weapon but I wish it came with a INSTALLED front sight. Anything is better than nothing. Oh, and yes, a better rear sight than the fold-down "popsickle" sight.
All the Samsons and Midland Ind. sights are great. But for the price of the gun I'd like a workable factory provided sight that worked.

Which front sight to use with the factory folding rear?

From RCArms.com's post, the one that I ordered from SIG's website may no longer be available, but if you can't find it on their website, its worth a quick call to their customer service to be sure and ask about options.

Using AR height sights on a 556 is a step in the wrong direction. Where your head rests on the stock dictates a much shorter sight setup.

Of course, low mounts for black guns are harder to come by than AR type.

Love mine as well! I

Here it is next to my Sig 551-2 SP SWAT, eventually the 556R will match in color to the 551 once my friend gets around to Cerakoting it.

As far as I know, there is one height 556 front sight available which works with the Sig Diopter sight. There are some lower profile sights like the Aurora sights as well as the aftermarket sights utilizing a taller AR compatible front sight.
