Tonight I tried to load some rifle rounds, but when I swapped out the cylinders and inserts in my LNL, I could get anything right. It seemed that no matter how much I screwed in the insert, I was still getting 29 grains of CFE 223 every time. After messing with it for a while, I gave up and tried to go back to pistol without success. I fixed that problem, but still can't figure out how to get the insert to adjust.

How do the stick powder meter through the LNL? Once I dispose of my 4lbs of CFE 223, 4 lbs of H335 and 1/2 lb of BL(C)-2 I'd like to try some. All these ball powders get everywhere and stick to everything.

The shorter kernel extruded powders like Re15, and IMR8208XBR meter great in my Uniflow, which is darn near exactly the same as the Hornady measure.

Larger extruded powders like H4350, and Varget... not so much.

With the large cavity drum removed from the measure, insert the metering unit into the drum.

Look at the other end and watch and see that the metering unit is moving when you are twisting it. Maybe the treads on the metering unit have become disengaged somehow.

Also make sure there is little or no space between the walls of the drum and the metering insert. It will be obvious if you are using the wrong insert.

If the cavity in the drum is changing sizes, the amount of powder will change once the powder column in the measure has settled.

Sound like you were using a pistol insert in a rifle cylinder. Stick powders do not dispense very easy on a cylinder dispenser like the Hornandy and RCBS Uniflow. Ball powders will give you the best results. Cylinder/tubular powders can be dispensed pretty accurate with the right technique but unless you dump the powder manually it want happen. Be careful use the auto dump with tubular powder. I had it roll the brass mouth in when it hangs. I disconnected the linkage and dumped it manually.

I have the micrometer heads on my powder dispenser and when I first got it the small screw on the end was not tight. This caused the dial to tun with out the piston moving. Once I tighten it all was fine.

I'd clean it good, wipe it down with a dryer sheet, and run a pound of powder through it.

If screwing the insert in/out does nothing to vary the volume of the charge you're getting, then it's assembled wrong in some way, or completely defective. I suspect the former.

If you are using the micrometer adjuster, the thimble may be spinning instead of turning the shaft. There is a screw on the tip of the thimble that may need to be tightened. If this is what's happening, you should "calibrate" the thimble. It's harder to explain than to do, just play with it a bit and it'll become obvious.
