Load ruger old vaquero

Ive had new and old vaqueros for a long time and Ive never found a factory load that shot point of aim. One of these I'm going to file the front sights down but close enough has always been close enough for me.

Driftwood, your original and New Vacquero frames look identical to me. Can you visually see added weight or thickness in areas up close on the old one that I can't see in your pic? (I know the old one is supposed to handle hotter loads btw) Thanks
Yes they are different guns, I own both. The old Vaqueros are more like a blackhawk, new vaqueros more like a SAA.

I am a holster maker and make them different for a new and old vaquero. The old Vaquero and Blackhawk will pretty much use the same holster whereas the New Vaquero uses a Colt SAA holster.

Well, I learned some things (though not what I was asking lol)
I would like to know(if anyone does) what available factory loading seems to shoot to point of aim in an original vaquero?
I have no desire to shoot 45 colt plus p in it though I do in my Blackhawk and wanted the old model so in the unlikely event I made a mistake it wouldn't be catastrophic.

Howdy Again

The problem is, your question is ambiguous.

Point of impact will vary from point of aim depending on the distance to the target. Do you want to know what round will shoot to point of aim at 5 yards? 10 yards? 50 yards? 100 yards?

You're going to have to shoot it and see what works in your hand. It may shoot different for you than someone else. One handed, two handed, how tight you hold it and how you grip it is going to effect the POI.

That said generally I find them to shoot low with weaker Cowboy Action type loads and more on the bullseye with the heavier bullets and a little more powder. The hotter the load generally the higher they shoot.

I know of a few that have filed the front sight to bring the poi up so it's not uncommon for them to shoot low.

Howdy Again

If you notice, I filed the front sight down a bit on the 'original model' Vaquero at the top of this photo. I was shooting targets at about the same distance you are talking about. I was shooting my standard Smokeless load, a 250 grain bullet over 7.5 grains of Unique. This pretty much brought me the point of impact being the same as the point of aim. Sorry, I don't really know what the velocity was, but I expect it was somewhere around 700-750 fps. A bit lighter than the classic 250-255 grain bullet at 850-900 FPS rcmodel referred to.

No matter what you do, it will require some experimentation. Do not expect to buy one box of ammo and have the gun shoot exactly as you want it to. In addition to the various loads you might try, variation will be caused by a bunch of factors that involve the shooter himself. How you hold the gun and how you aim will have a great deal to do with it. When I sight in a handgun for the first time, I always do it seated from a bench with sandbags. You will get folks that tell you that you should shoot the gun the same way you intend to shoot it most of the time. However I have found that standing up and holding the gun out one handed or two handed only adds variability to the experiment. Adding the human element will be a measure not only of the loads, but how steady you can hold the gun.

That is why I always shoot seated from sandbags first time out with any handgun. I hold the gun lightly with two hands, so it will recoil as freely as possible. I rest either the butt of the gun, or the heels of my hands, on the sandbags, depending on the grip style. And don't forget to raise the sandbags up on a toolbox or something so that you can sight it without craning your neck. An uncomfortable seated position will not help accuracy.

Here are a couple of links to some ammo you might want to try. But remember, you will probably need to experiment with a few different loads before you find what you want.

factory loads

Hello!
I shoot any old cowboy load my LGS has for now until I get my bench up and running again and my old Vaquero 7 1/2" shoots a little high at 25 yards and the same for my favorite hand load but them shoots a tighter group!

Nice looking grips on your Vaquero! Always liked the look of ivory grips on a blued gun.

I have to ask, at what range is your Bisquero shooting POA=POI? It can't be sighted in for all distances, bullets don't do that.
I usually shoot ~15/17 yards because that's how the local range us set up. I'm guessing it will still be very close @25 years but probably not that much further. I'm not pushing the bullets very hard either, only about 700fps.

I don't shoot competition with the Rugers and don't shoot the 45 Colt all that often, only for fun. If I shot it more I would have more information, sorry... I didn't think if it earlier but I did buy that revolver used so it's possibly it was sighted in previous to my getting it.
