Carry guns and Home Defense guns are kept loaded. All others are empty and put in the safe.

My carry gun is my home defense gun. All others are locked up unloaded with the ammo stored elsewhere (call me paranoid).

Carry weapon loaded. One revolver in the gun safe loaded, HD shotgun loaded(8) rounds. At night good light and cell phone in addition to firearm loaded on nightstand. I rotate mags in my carry weapon, shotgun is safety off, chamber empty simply rack and fire, 30-30 tucked away near the back door, safety off, chamber empty lever and I am ready. All others are empty and locked away in the gun safes. A good knife is always handy.

Here's a question, might not go with this thread BUT....

Why do you folks with a shotgun want to "rack the slide" when your handguns have one in the pipe????

If some critter gets in my house, I'm not going to give them that split second to soil themselves.
The faint click as the safety comes off is the only sound my firearms make right before they go bang.

Just sayin'

Because the only one I keep chambered is on my hip or beside me when I'm not wearing it.

If I keep the 870 or AR "at the ready," I leave the chamber open. Just a habit. The daily carry piece is always with me so it is always ready. The long gun isn't always at my side, so if I feel I have time to go fetch it then I'll have time to cycle the action. If time is that crucial, I'll stick to the sidearm. The sidearm is with me and quick to access. I'd rather use the spare time, if there is any to gather my family and call the cops as opposed to going and grabbing the long gun.

Same here, but if someone is in my home already...I don't have time to run to the closet. Roll over, grab weapon and handle business. I don't like keeping an AR or an 870 by the bed. My carry piece is there and that's enough.

it's a scary noise
simply rack and fire

My question was for folks that like to think when something goes bump in the night you can shout "BOO" and make the boogey man go away.

I'm not condemning anyone's choices, just trying to understand.

As I said, if some lowlife is in MY house, I ain't gonna give him any warning about the coming events.

If they are going in the safe then they are unloaded. Only firearms I keep loaded are EDC and Bedside pistol.

HD guns loaded and ready to go. When I'm not home, the safe is locked with the guns in it.

All other guns are unloaded.

Guns empty, loaded magazines, except for say my shotguns and tube fed magazines, I leave those empty as well.

Definitely a novice question on my part, but what's the best way to store a HD shotgun, vertical in the corner? If so stock on the ground or barrel down? Don't know if it matters but figured I'd ask.

all rifles un loaded except the .22, tube is loaded action is locked back, 357mag revolver in my night stand loaded, 32acp in wifes night stand loaded, My carry wepon Bersa 380 loaded, kids bbgun in there rooms loaded

Carry gun, HD gun, and shotgun are all loaded +1. The two pistols are holstered and the shotgun is readily available. The AR is is unloaded with action open, but plenty of full mags in case they are ever needed. Everything else is unloaded and empty mag well.

My 45 is ready to go and it will do but I was taught a handgun gave you a chance(I only need very few seconds) to get the shotgun and rack a round. Now look at it this way, a mag of 45 or the same number of #3 buck? I will take the shotgun. I don't mind someone beating feet when they hear me rack it. Harder to shoot over the shoulder at a fast run.

They are all loaded and on safe. Except for the M91/30. I store it with the bolt out and in the safe since the rifle won't fit in the safe.

I have kids in the house.

Stored guns are fully unloaded, in the big safe.

Defensive house guns have fully charged mags, nothing in the chamber, and are in fast access safes.

Carried guns are in the holster, fully charged mag, and a round in the chamber.

I live in a "low crime" area. I normally store my rifles empty, but the varmit gun and the AR have a loaded mag close by (in the safe). Same with a Ruger Mark II in the safe. My semi-auto HD and the accessible shotgun have full mags, but empty tubes. My thinking is that I'm more likely to suffer a fire than a home invasion, and I'd rather the rounds that cook off not be in a chamber. This is the main reason I use a semi for HD, as I like to store the revolver with an empty cylinder.

On the rare occasions that I've have to go out and investigate a noise in the middle of the night, I've known in advance it was a critter, not a human. Depending on the noise I'll either slide some game loads into the shotgun or take the time to open the safe and grab the Mark II.

I live in a "low crime" area too.
That don't mean some crack-head or meth-mongrel won't stray into the area.
My kids are grown and gone, my girlfriend's kids are grown and gone save one.
I have a pistol on my desk, one under my pillow, one under her's, shotty beside the bed, one behind the front door, etc. All throughout the house.

No, I'm not paranoid, just prepared for just about anything.

I understand the situations with SMALL children, but that is when you should start their training.

My dad gave me a Marlin .22mag for my 6th birthday.

Both my daughters are crack shots, as is my grandson( I'm working on the granddaughter).

Don't be scared of your kids finding your guns, they will.
It's up to YOU to teach them what to do when they do find them or need them.

I empty my guns for storage. My HD gun is loaded.

Same here....and since Wisconsin does not yet allow private citizens to transport a loaded firearm in a vehicle of any kind, whether it's at the range or hunting, I need to unload them before I go home. Wouldn't make much sense to load them up when I get home, and then unload them before I go shoot/hunt again. Back in the days when I could just walk out the backdoor and shoot/hunt, this was a moot point.

Grumpy, I like the way you think. LOL. I also have a Mossburg 590 by the bed. My .45 semi I wear on my hip at ALL times. ( yes, even in the bathroom.) My Bushmaster Carbon 15 is also standing by with a full (30 round mag loaded with 75-grain HP) My wife knows how to "rack" the 590. and how to chamber a round in the AR. No kids at home, and I have a Winchester Model 70 in .270 in the gun room loaded with 130 grain HP in case I have to "reach out and touch" someone. Can't be too ready in todays world. I wish at times that it did not have to be this way. I didn't create the world we live in, But I'll be damned if I'll be a victim of it, either.
