Loaded or Unloaded.

The ones in the safe are empty. If I needed it in a hurry, it wouldn't be in the safe. I suppose it would also be a hazard if you had a loaded revolver or a chambered semiauto in a safe if there was a fire.

I keep an accessible semi-auto loaded and holstered. I don't trust myself with a loaded revolver, yet. Because I can't resist the urge to dry fire it every time I see one. :)

HD guns have a loaded magazine, empty chamber.

Carry gun is loaded and stowed when not on my person. Unloaded and stowed if I'm not in the bedroom asleep where the dresser drawer is.

All others are unloaded and stored in either a safe or cabinet.

In my house, firearms are defensive arms or range toys.

Defensive arms are kept the same as they are outside the safe. Pistols are fully loaded, rifles have a full mag and the hammer down on an empty chamber. Shotgun is stored with a full tube and a cocked hammer on an empty chamber.

Range toys are stored empty.
