So I went to the gun show this weekend and bought a 91/30. I thought it looked pretty cool but it is my first "old school" rifle. How do I load it? Do I need stripper clips? Do the cartridges just puch in from the top?

Just push them down from the top. There's a slot in the receiver just in front of the bolt face that the rim goes into. Then just push the cartridge straight down until it goes into the mag. Nothing to it.

You can load it one at a time or by strippers. The best stripper clips are the Tikkakoskis and some of the older Soviet ones. Most of the ones on the market are cheap sheet metal repros and aren't nearly as good. When you load one at a time, remember to load with the rim in front of the one below it and sort of push back as you push down. This prevents any rimlock. The interruptor/ejector is SUPPOSED to keep this form being a problem, but the spring action is often worn out and it tends to be sloppy.

Cosmoline posted this same info in a previous thread a while back, It HELPED ME COMPLETELY figure out my stripper clips. You should be able to find them easily on-line they have a "T" in a triangle symbol on the back end or attend a local gun show and they should be there as well. They are very fast and helpful to load a mosin with very little learning curve.

Be aware that the bolt on a Mosin is a Manly Bolt, not one of those dainty little Nancy bolts like you find on a Mauser. You got to muscle that thing to get it to cycle. Use the palm of you hand and not your fingers to cycle it.
and when shooting. if the bolt locks up. whack the handle on the nearest bench or with a block of wood.
heres how you want the rounds to be over lapped in the striper to get a good clean loading. this is the "flying wing" Cosmoline talks about. and if you fly it into the clip guide. move your hand to the top round, lift the tip with your index and push the base down into the gun with your thumb it should work gloriously. just dont cut yourself on the clip or smash your finger ont he reciever like i have done.

The interrupter should take care of how the rims overlap. That is what it is there for. The big thing with stripper clips is to do what is in post #2. Pull up the tip of the top round, and push down towards the rim with your thumb. I usually have my thumbnail facing the stripper clip, but that is me. It takes a little practice. Also, some rifles are just not good for this. I have some that it is also smooth, while others I just load individually because it is such a fight.

For what it's worth, I just got a "new" 1943 izzy 91/30 from Big 5 today (Century Arms origin, only a VERY little cosmoline on the rifle, and well cleaned/oiled when it arrived...so I cleaned it anyway...
). First Mosin. Never loaded a Mosin before. Got cheap stripper clips from Numrich (very thin metal, but nice sharply bent corners). Loaded strippers, and loaded the rifle from a stripper perfectly on the first try after reading the articles here about strippers. If you load it the way they tell you to, you will have no problem with the strippers (I didn't even have to tilt up the first round, they just slid right in, with no resistance at all). These guys have solved the stripper clip problem, hands down.
At least the newer strippers out of Numrich are decent, if not particularly sturdy, but at $1 each, it's not a bad deal. The rifle itself was VERY nice, discounting cosmoline in the stock, and a murderous safety/firing pin spring, but the accessory pack was marginal at best. Bayonet had obviously been dragged through several hundred kilometers of rock garden, the cleaning rod handle was too big to fit into the cleaning rod slot, no brush, no rod extension, and the oil can covered in cosmoline got grease on the sling. Still, not bad for $89.
ETA: Maybe pics later. Gotta finish getting the cosmoline lacquer off of the metal protecting the sling mounts.
