Whats the longest distance you can hit a target at with a reasonable amount of consistancy with your handgun?
What caliber are you using?what model? scoped?
What kind of distance can you hunt deer with using a 44 mag?
Just looking for a rough idea:)

Year's Ago-

I was known to make consistent hit's out to 100
yards (and maybe a little beyond ?) with a variety
of magnum caliber handgun's. The ones that come
to mind are, but not limited to: 4" S&W model 57
.41 magnum, 6.5" S&W model 29 .44 magnum, a
4-5/8" old model Ruger Blackhawk .357 magnum,
several 4" and 6" barrel Colt Python's .357 magnums,
a Ruger Security-Six with a 4" tube in .357 magnum,
several .357 magnum S&W's, with 4" and 6" barrel's;
ie: model's 19, 27, 28, 66, and 686.

But nowday's, I'm a lot older and can't see near as
good as I use to; so I try to shoot at target's some
where between 25 and 50 yard's.

*All weapons used WERE NOT equipped with scopes!
Much of this shooting was in the company of our ole'
bud and fellow THR member Capbuster!

Ala Dan.....Do you hunt at those distances?....is it considered humane?

Greeting's sonny-

No sir, I don't hunt at all; as I am strictly a target
shooter/plinker type. Back then, we just happened
to have a suitable range that allowed for that kind'a
distance. Nowday's, the old landfill has become a
dumping ground for trash, trees, old tires, along
with glass object's.

When it was kept up, we use to have a large
frame metal target made out of aircraft aluminum,
hanging between two trees atop the cliff we used
for a backstop. Old timer's say it might have been
as much as 120 yards from the firing line to the
target. Funny thing is, when you hit the red bulls-
eye target; the whole thing would swing back and
forth.

I can consistently hit beer cans 3 out of 5 shots at 50 yds with Ruger Security Six, 6" barrell, adjustable sights, target grips, and the other two shots are usually adjacent to the can. Ammo is PMC 158 grn JSP.
Past 50 yards I just can't seem to hold gun still enough for consistent hits and the sights just aren't fine enough for accurate hitting.
My last attempt at longer : 75 yds. 1 exact bulls eye, two shots completely missed the pie plate.
100 yds. - all 3 shots missed the pie plates

I have 2 hunting handguns that are accurate out to 200 yards....one is a SSK Industries 375JDJ, and the other is a Savage Striker in 308.......I also have a 44 mag contender with a 14" barrel with a T/C scope that I would not be afraid to take a shot at 100 yards....also a Taurus Raging Bull in 454 Casull with a Leupold 2x scope that would also have a 100 yard range.....my open sighted Ruger Super Blackhawk, probably wouldn't take a shot over 50 yards.......

We used to shoot the rifle range 10" gongs at 300 yards. You could walk your rounds to the targets. Everything from .38sp to .45 Colt open sighted revolvers were used. Consistantly I would have to say from 40 to 50 yards with targets such as cans and plastic drink bottles
Hunting is restricted to under 75 yards by me.
