Long range tuning

No problem,
im about done licking my wounds and with a few rounds left over I've decided to head out to 500 yards for some further tuning, I think.... I think ... I hope...I have an understanding of my Sunday targets.

Conditions obviously kicked my butt.... and my bags needed a touch more sand to maintain tracking.
My seating depth change although the groups are slightly smaller also induce more vertical that im not crazy about ..SO..i may split the difference on seating and add a touch more powder to hopefully tighten up a tad.
Im also interested in looking at a totally new seating depth perhaps closer to touch.

I will report back.

Well thx, im still learning this method myself, but it obviously works well or the Deep Creek fellas wouldn't use it. I am actually surprised at the number of views this thread has gotten at all as most of the brass prep and work bench stuff is pretty dry. ( not a lot of action) plus there are failures but I've never been shy about kicking myself and improving. Im told consistency is the key so in my mind I have a load that repeats just keep at it an inch at a time as I don't have to always shoot the smallest just don't shoot BIG..

Well Gents ive been down for a few days mostly from poor weather, in fact we had snow twice and now more high winds.
While im waiting to resume tuning I went back and looked at a couple of targets with one particular that puzzles me, as a question to y'all

could sun on the target cause me to aim this low?

Question. What have you done or changed since you shot in competition?

Reason I’m asking. The target in your post 54 looks pretty similar to your most recent target, post 84.

Edit to add: I realize now that you are looking at an older target in post 84.

@Ru4real
Can you help me with my question ?
@Nature Boy
Bill , I was hoping with your LR experience you might know the answer it's been bugging me since I shot it.
Pictured below are the slighter targets that each shot gets marked with a orange disc, after the the 6 min period a record target gets hung over the first then raised.
All of my sighters are in the center no problem yet as I stated earlier there is some kind of mental error because im sending rounds feeling good about this record target until I see the results.

My guess is that you are having a scope parallax problem, as demonstrated by a possible different rest/cheek weld between your sighters and shots for record.

My guess is that when it’s “go time” for you, shooting for record, you are “settling in on your stock with a similar cheek weld” which is why your groups are pretty good, just low as compared to your sighters.

If your scope wasn’t exhibiting parallax error at the distance you are shooting, it wouldn’t matter. But this is just a guess on my part.

Should I drive up and watch you shoot, LOL? I was thinking of buying a place in Blanchard, MT or Wallace, ID before I settled on my current place in UT. I’ve spent quite a bit of time traipsing around your neck of the woods.

Anyway and moving forward i made it to the 500 yard range today just ahead of a rain storm for a little more seating depth testing. Blue might be worth a look at 1 k vs the +21depth , today's wind 9:00 @ 5- 8mph' added... It appears that they are (Trying) to lay down a bit more and hopefully stay small . 20210424_151144.jpg

20210424_150836.jpg Here is the same photo prior to being butchered with my farm boy speak.
The wind really plays a part in these extended yardage test weather seating, powder, neck tension or primers but i can still see tendencies with hopefully a direction that leads to smaller groups.

Some days I just turn around and go back home....i think we've all been there...

20210429_082531.jpg 20210428_151448.jpg 20210428_123738.jpg I made it out this morning for a scope adjust and general load maintenance, using my best seating depth im still getting vertical, maybe fortunate I brought the chronoghaph - looks like my speeds are way up along with my ES, Im assuming the rise in temps are throwing a monkey wrench in my fps soup as well as maybe my scale is sticking ? Definitely spitting a round on basically every group.
Weird..

Now if I had colored the bullets and kept them in order perhaps they would correlate with the speed variances.
Something to think about moving forward.
I'll keep tinkering as the dates approach but this is the way im tuning for the 2021 season.
Thanks fellas
