any one use longshot for 40 s&w target loads ? any good for that I have read
the it works well for max loads new powder for me I was lucky and lgs had a
pound for sell. Have not seen any pistol powder for a bit of time now.
I have a bunch of xtream 165gr fp to load up for target ammo
Thanks for any opinions I have load data just a new powder I have not used

Love it in 45 ACP and light bullets loaded near max. Would like to try it in 38 Super.

I use it and find that it smuts my cases with the lighter loads.. I ran it up near the max charge and it helped out... It meters well and shoots pretty accurate for me.. I would recommend it if you can get your hands on some...

Since HS-7 was discontinued IMO Longshot is the best powder for the 40 S&W/10mm.

I agree it's a very good choice for the 9mm too and the .38 Super but I would not and do not use Longshot in a low pressure round like the 45 Auto. It's just not efficient in the 45 Auto, faster powders are a better choice.

I can't believe I was just thinking about this load and this thread popped up.

I carry 165 Remington Golden Sabers in my Glock 23 as my personal defense load. I am working up a load to replicate the 165 Golden Saber in terms of recoil and accuracy for practice. I believe they produce around 1050 fps out of a 4 inch barrel. I was looking to use Longshot, because I think I can get to those numbers with low pressure and not have to push it to the max. I may even be able to hit my goal of 1050 with right around the start of 7.3 grains.

Zero 165gr JHP, 7.3gr Longshot, velocity hopefully around 1100.

Longshot is pretty much my exclusive powder for the .40 and 9mm, and has been for a long time. I load jacketed only, and enjoy running them at full pressure / velocity, Longshot allows me to do that without having to dink around with high pressure issues, it's just that easy to load with.

However, performance at the lower end of the table is less than favorable, it needs plenty of pressure to perform consistently, and to reliably cycle the firearm, and definitely don't reduce charges to below published.

thanks for the reply's I would like to stay close to 1000 fps with 165 gr plated Hodgdon list 6.9 @ 1,091 for berrys plated fp starting load would it be bad to start at 6.5 to drop fps a bit ? I have been using true blue and silhouette before those hs6 , but cant find these anymore around here.
thans again all

As others have said, Longshot works great in both 9 and 40.
I load 180gr FP with 6.5ge for just over 1000 fps

If the Hodgdon load data says the starting charge weight of 6.9gr will generate 1,091 fps you will be lucky to get 1,000 fps from your gun. I highly recommend you not download below the starting charge weight recommended by Hodgdon. Even at the starting load you may not like the results because like said above, Longshot performs much better at the higher end of the pressure limits.

Don't guess, that's what tested load data is for. A starting charge is just that, where you should start. Dropping back almost 6% below the starting charge weight is usually not recommended.

What Arch said above^^^

Yes it would be "bad" to go lower than the start load. There is no reason to do so. You are not going to get 1000 fps anyway.

Anyone ever use it with lead? A faster burning powder would seem more appropriate, but I thought I would ask.

In the .38 Special I don't care for Longshot with lead bullets although HS-6 IMO is great with lead bullets and has a similar burn rate. I can't speak for Longshot and lead bullets in the 40 S&W.

I use and love Longshot in 9mm, 10mm, .357 (though there are better powders for this), .40 and .45.

It really does perform better in the upper end of it's range because it is a slower burning powder and likes pressure to burn it cleanly.

If I could find it right now, it would be my only powder besides Titegroup and AutoComp.

It's also nice to have a little Unique on hand for anything you want to use it for. Problem is right now, Unique is flatly unavailable in my area.

I load Longshot with my heavier gr bullets in both 9mm and 40 S&W. I like it and see no reason to use anything else.

Thanks All I will stick with the starting load, I really need to get a chrono to know for
sure I am guessing published FPS are on the high side

I don't know about you but I routinely exceeded published velocities in some firearms, my 06 is slinging 150gr TSXs at 3050+fps and my 7m-08 is driving 140gr SGK to 2950+fps with published loads well over their listed speeds, neither is even close to pressure signs and they are both 22" barrels. Never chronod my 40 cal longshot load though, not for my gun, I carry a 9mm.

To answer my own question about lead (175gr in this case) and Longshot, I worked up a few loads yesterday and believe I found a pretty good one. I had little to no leading (hard to be sure with only a few rounds), a clean burn and no pressure signs. More testing will be required, since I only made a few at each powder charge. I would share the load information, but I cannot find referenced load data for this combination anywhere and I would not feel comfortable doing so. Looking at published data for plated bullets, it wasn't hard to find a starting load I felt was a safe place to start for a soft lead bullet. I still think a faster powder is probably better for lead, but I wanted to test it for myself.

7.1gr of longshot gave me 1013fps in a 4" barrel with 165gr plated FP. Accuracy improved with 7.3 & 7.5gr and the velocity increased to 1038 & 1070 respectively.

I use HS6 as well but am switching to long shot in 40 because of the powder shortage.

Nosler 135gr JHP w/ 11gr of Longshot out of a Glock 35 5.3 in. barrel (well under book max) yes that's 40 cal and not 10mm - great fun exploding water filled gallon milk jugs
