After researching every suggestion that's been given to me here and other places on the web first of all I can't say thanks enough for all the advice, and secondly, I've decided to go with the Savage Mark II FV-SR paired with a suppressor. So far scope of choice is the Simmons .22mag 3-9x32 w AO.

So yes, now on to the suppressor. Suggestions so far have been for the Silencerco 22 Sparrow that I believe I've seen for around $200, and the AAC Pilot and Pilot 2 I've seen for $300-$340. Goal is to fire as large a slug as possible (greatest momentum) out the end of a suppressed FV-SR, and the loudest noise is the action of the rifle itself. So for sure I'm looking at sub-sonic. But with that in mind, can anyone give me opinions on these suppressors or possibly others in this same price range that can get this done? Or are these two pretty much it? A secondary goal might be the ability for the suppressor to be adapted to a different caliber weapon, although being new to suppressors I'm not sure how feasible that might be.

looking forward

If you're considering the Savage Mark II FV-SR, take a look at Thompson Machine's Operative B. It's an integral silencer built on a Savage Mark II FV. Check out this link and scroll down:

If you're dead set on the FV-SR, I'm sure Thompson Machine could build an Operate B on that Savage model instead. Looks like the same basic action. I'm betting their integral would be extremely quiet.

I went with an AAC Element 2 for mine. Mono-Core suppressors give that first round pop and I wanted to avoid that if I could. I also plan to use it on a couple different firearms so I went that way. As for a Scope for that rifle take a look at a Mueller Hybrid 3-9Xx40 it has the longer eye relief that helps out when you remove that plastic stock form the rifle and put it into a Boyd's Tacticool stock.

SWR Spectre II is a better can than the sparrow and cheaper than the AAC with no noticeable difference in sound. The sparrow has more first round pop. I am also partial to one of my new demo cans a Thunderbeast 22L its designed for the bigger rim fire rounds and has more.volume only down side is its not user serviceable which to some.people that's the end.of the world but I have been shooting sealed cans for years and my older ones.sound just as good as the new ones, you just have to take care of them.

If you can find a Sparrow ss for $200, you should snap it up. In my opinion, the best values are the Sparrow ss and the Spectre II, I believe both can be used on all rimfires and even the .22 hornet. I found a good deal and wound up with the Sparrow ss, but I think I would have been just as happy with the Spectre II.

As an aside, with the Sparrow I can hear some minor frp on pistols, but I've never really been able to hear it on rifles.

For the price range you specified (300-400), I think your best bet is a Spectre II. The fact that you can take it apart for cleaning really is a plus imho. Also, the materials used are stainless and will last a long time if maintained properly, i.e. no baffle strikes.

I have shot several different .22 suppressors and I have thus far picked the AAC Element II and the Innovative Arms Apex-S. The Element II has no first round pop, but that is not really an issue for me. It is appreciated by some family members who are sensitive to noise.

The Sparrow is an awesome can, but for the money, it is very difficult to beat the Spectre II. I think that it is probably the best suppressor out there when it comes to bang for the buck.

I did the price request via email and it says it is $295.00. That's a crazy good deal for that suppressor. Granted, you also have to consider the cost of the tax stamp and the dealer transfer fee. So you're probably looking at:

$300 - suppressor
$75 - transfer fee (estimated)
$200 - tax stamp

That is about $575. Not bad for an item that will keep you grinning ear to ear every time you shoot that host weapon. By the way, I have that exact rifle but with a different scope. I am willing to bet you are going to be very pleased with that setup. Also, while integrated suppression is cool, it is nice to be able to take that suppressor and thread it on a different host weapon. Ruger 22/45s are now available in threaded models and they make awesome hosts. Plus, the amount of modifications and accessories for those pistols seems to be endless.

Hope this helps,
SOTG
