I've decided I want a .22-250. I'd like a sporting rifle that I can carry around as opposed to a 14 lb bench rifle type. Will be doing some coyote calling and shooting as well as shooting some prairie dogs up in Wyoming this fall. So far I've seriously looked at Remington's SPS models. I'd like to stay at about $800 or less for the rifle. Ideas?

I prefer my bolt rifles to have a mauser design to their actions. Actions that feature control round feeding and also have M70 type wing safeties are superior machinery.

Brands such as Winchester, Kimber, Mauser, CZ etc.

The 22-250 is just fine.

The 243 will take pests as well and be legal in more places for bigger game.

Thanks for your suggestons. I also like Mauser type actions. The CZ 550 American looks good. Have even thought of perhaps a used high wall. I have a bolt .223 as well as a bolt .243. I was wanting either a .204 or 22-250 and have pretty much settled on the .22-250 for several reasons, one of which is that the 204 kinda drops off after 300 yds or so. I've never owned a .22-250 and I hope it won't duplicate the 223 or 243. We'll just have to see.

I went with a Remington 700 VLS. Buds gunshop has them for $821. I topped mine with a Leupold VX3 6.5-20x40mm LR scope with the Varmint reticle. This is an awesome rifle.

The Winchester Stealth weighs 10 pounds, but is extremely accurate. I bought mine about 1 month ago, for $899. I also have a Stealth in .308 Win that I bought about 3 or 4 years ago, for $999. It too is extremely accurate, typically firing 0.25" center to center, 3 shot groups, after already having fired 12 shots just getting a zero. So, yes, 12 shots fired, then shots 13, 14 and 15 to test a 3-shot group. That is some serious shooting.

The Stealths are becoming difficult to locate NIB, because Winchester no longer makes them. If I were to select the single, best-buy today, I would point you to the Winchester M70 Coyote Light:

Savage, Tikka, and Winchester are my top picks for affordable light weight bolt action rifles (And I have owned a BUNCH) Avoid new Remingtons like the plague they are not what they used to be, not even close. I had an SPS and it was garbage I won't consider touching another. You could track down a good 1980s model but in 22-250 you can almost bet that you will be due for a barrel change since it is such an intense cartridge. Some might make the case that the 243 is every bit as useful (if not more so) on varmint and vastly better for deer class game, count me in that crowd.
Tikka makes a superbly accurate very light weight rifle with an action slicker then synthetic oil on black ice, they are reasonably priced and a solid value, my top pick, I recommend the T3 Stainless version since their wood is crappy looking.
The new FN Winchester 70 is also fantastic in the accuracy department and I only count them a hair behind the T3 because mine is bullet weight picky, loves 150s and 180s but hates 165s and 125s, never heard of such but hey it shoots 150gr SSTs/Accutips/BTSP well under an inch with Varget with boring regularity so I am a happy camper. Winchester Featherweights also have some fantastic wood work, I mean world class good and the action is a modern 98 Mauser style action, not as smooth as the Tikka but feels like a million bucks and ejects brass with an authority.
Savage is the least expensive of the bunch (normally) they are usually bullet picky and all the ones I have had came out of the box with some sandpaper rough rifling but none the less they have all shot really really well and the barrel smooths out after a couple hundred rounds (that is when I stop seeing the lead flakes when brushing the bore out anyway) I have owned half a dozen of them and never regretted them for a second.

Love .22-250. Think the young man talking about wallowing out the bore be speaking of a .220 Swift maybe? The 250 dont get cute like that. Also love Ruger 77 bolt action. Want to say mine was an M but its been a while back. From the old ballistic charts available in the day..the .243..270..and .22-250 was pretty much on the same page as the other as far as the trajectory and flat shooting properties. For popping coyotes and deer in open country cannot be beat in my book. Only critter upon which it ever made an exit on the far side was a good sized white tale buck hit with a handload of 55 grain solid base Nosler...loaded on the weak end of the chart. It poke a hole and the deer run a little way but not far. Regular old Federal and Hornady factory loads bring it down and do not come out. Now Remington Peters HP in that weight was highly explosive for some reason. Occasionally just knock a chunk of fur out of a coyote and they run off. Might be good for exploding jack rabbits or something. I only had cheap Bushnell Banner Scope on it but it could reach out an smite something form a long way off...lol. Cant go wrong with the caliber or maker. I do not buy anything which says Remington or Obamie Motors.
