Hey guys, I know next to nothing about rifles. My first foray may be with a cheap Mosin. Anyway, I am thinking about getting my dad a new deer rifle, as he has been shooting his 30-30 for about 45-50 years (since he was in his teens). He mentioned that if he ever bought another hunting rifle, it would be a 7mm-08, bolt-action, in stainless. I have no idea where to start looking for such a thing. I am fairly new to the gun world as a whole, so I would certainly appreciate any help you guys could give me. What kind of price range am I looking at? Which rifles should I be considering? Thanks in advance.

new you can figure on $550 on up from there.

i know remington and ruger have versions available.

stay away from sub-20" barrels unless he specifically said he wanted one - muzzle blast is a serious issue in 18 and 16" barrels.

Why stainless?? There are so many good choices in blued in 7mm-08 for the budget minded. The Stevens Model 200 in 7mm-08, which is what I have, is a GREAT rifle! OK, the stock isn't the greatest, but for hunting, it's fine enough to not worry about getting a scuff or two on... can always be upgraded later.

The Model 200 is essentially a Savage 10/110 without the AccuTrigger.

Well, he said he wanted stainless.... but I guess I should take some suggestions on blued guns too. The Stevens gun is definitely priced right. I am also seeing a synthetic/blued Remington 715 in the same price range, maybe a little cheaper.

As for the stainless guns, a quick search on gunbroker found me a Remington 24" gun for $800 (not including shipping, taxes, and transfer, of course). Quite a difference in price. I may have to wait and get him a stainless version later or just get him the blue version now. I understand that I'm going to pay a premium for stainless, but what stainless models are available in the lower end of the spectrum?

Thanks for pointing out the other guns, Schleprok62. That could prove to be some very good information.

No sweat dude...

The Savage 16FSS is available in 7mm-08 ss... it lists for $640... you can figure it'll be a little lower than that...

The Stevens, I think is the best rifle in it's class and price range, not to mention it also offers the widest selection of calibers long and short action. I've got about $425 total into mine, with a 4-16x50 scope, and it'll shoot better than me all day in the rain... of course, I also handload... :D

I have a Remington 700 in 7mm-08 in stainless with a synthetic stock... I like it a lot. I like the cartridge, I like the rifle, and I like not having to worry too much if it gets wet or if I get my hands on the barrel when I'm putting it away.

remmy model 7

Hi,
I have a remmy model 7 in 7mm08. It is a truly great round it kills very well and shoots nicely.
The model 7 i have is blue and walnut.... but if i was looking again i would have bought the same rifle in stainless.

The action is fine, the trigger a delight, it is small and light. I use speer 145gr bullets the rifle is good for 2900 fps this is plenty fast enough, I have shot red stags (like your elk only a little bit smaller) fallow bucks (harder to put down when adrenalised). it also shoots a 130gr load very well. this is milder on the shoulder, don't get me wrong the 145 is fine.

I would go remmy again every time. for value i am well impressed. I know it is slightly more expensive than you were looking for.

best regards

steve

ps. just had a look at walmart and they have ruger m77 mk 2 at $575 usd. I have one of these as well and they are a smashing rifle

Shade00,

How much money are you looking to spend? Would your Dad want something that has a name attached to it, which is also quality, such as Browning, Winchester, Weatherby, etc.? Or are you wanting something that's a little more budget minded?

I get the impression that if he has been shooting the same .30-30 for 50 years he may be more into the utilitarian aspect than the fancy stuff. Any merit to that?

Is it your impression he would prefer a rifle that is made out of wood or rather some type of a composite material?
