No 4 British Enfield, The finest bolt action battle rifle of all time.
From the point of view of someone buying a mil-surp today, I am not sure I agree 100% with this statement, though I would obviously be mentally challenged if I said that the No. 4 was anything but a marvelous rifle.
For the money, I don't think you can beat a Swedish Mauser. All respect to the Enfield, but the action on those Swedes are fantastic (though admittedly not as fast as an Enfield) and I think both the practical accuracy and accuracy potential of the Swede is a little better. The Swede and the Enfield both are easy to get brass for and reload, in addition to a good selection of factory ammo.
But then, I have shooting examples of most all the commonly owned boltie battle rifles: an A3-03, a K31, the M/N, an Enfield and two Swedish Mausers. I don't flatly dislike any of them. In fact, I would rather shoot any one of these rifles as opposed to a moden bolt action. I love the 03, I really like the Enfield, the Mosin is a marvel of simplicity and ruggedness, the K31 is a blast to shoot, and the Swede is accurate and pleasant. If the OP has $1500 to spend, he could probably pick up two or three of the above rifles in good, shootable shape!
