Basically, something like the marlin 60 with a bolt. I saw the 981T but wanted to see what my other options are... A single shot would be OK with me as well but I would like to avoid any detachable magazines.

Any suggestions?

Thanks,

V.

Most have detachable magazines, and/or cost a good deal more than a Marlin 60.

Why specifically do you want the bolt action?

The 60 is an accurate gun, cheap and reliable.:)

Heh, good question... Why does any one want any rifle? :D I really cant answer why I want one. I love my 60 and can easily shoot quarter sized groups at 50 yards open sights... I think I want one so I can enjoy the slowed down rate of fire. I can blow through the rounds in the tub of the 60 really quickly so I think that might be one reason. The other might be improved accuracy? It might be some crazy bug in my head but bolt actions seem to be more accurate so I might be able to get a tad better vs where I am today with the 60...

Who knows, I just want another cheap toy to play with... :banghead:

Rem Model 5 at $189 as a door-opener at Cabela's on Saturday...blue steel and wood.

Was that last Saturday, or will it be this coming Saturday?

That's a pretty nice gun for that. But it does have a box mag.

Seriously, the most fun tube-fed gun I've ever shot was also a Marlin: a 39 lever gun.

I scoped my 60 and shoot the lever gun with irons.

That works for me. Yes, the 39A is more expensive, but man it's worth saving for.:)

The Savage's with the accu-trigger are nice rifles for the money. Accurate and offer a nice variety of models

re Cabela's - just got the ad today; it's part of their Memorial Day wknd sales...8 - 12am

Savage MKII $117 at walmart!

I've seen lots of older bolts at pawn shops for $59 and up. You can get trainers, eastern bloc, romainian for $100-125 or so. I've even been luckly and found a Moss 44 (american trainer) for $99 before. Pawn shops are good to check, I picked up a Sears recently for $38, it was very heavy 22lr, a 1950s Marlin sold under Sears brand.

Lots of older .22s at gun shops and pawn shops, lots under $100. Friend picked up a ratty looking Stevens 'Springfield' mod 82 on Saturday for $80OTD.
Single shot bolt.
Some wear on bluing, stock ratty, bore perfect. Refinished the stock, turned out to be a gorgeous little rifle, for cheap.
Don't count out the old ones.
Winchester 67 is another semi common old single shot 22 bolt.

your on with the marlin, shoot short, long and long rifle, will hold about 22 shorts at one time. Also the mod 25, an older one, that will also shoot s,l,lr, and the 25 is a fantastically accurate rifle, even though it is such a basic made rifle, and it is mag fed. None of them have to be new either, mod 80's and 81's have been made for about 75 years, and they are all good.

You might consider an H&R (New England Firearms) single shot. Lots of fun for the money and most of them come with a rail for scope mounting. Price is usually under $200 new.

The Savage MKII might be the cheapest at $117, but the Marlin 981T is the best value. Around $200. I have both and I highly favor the 981T.

As others have mentioned, the best value in a .22 is an old used Remington, Winchester, Marlin, Stevens etc.

I support the suggestion of buying secondhand. Obviously you don't need a new rifle, so you can take your time and shop around.

Yes, the 39A is more expensive, but man it's worth saving for

I have both the 981T and a 60 and the primary difference between them IMO is CLEANING them after a trip out to the range.

I love the 981T as you can shoot it and take it home and put it away. You want to clean it anyway? Pull the bolt and patch the barrel and put the bolt back in, simple as that and I'm anal about cleaning my guns.

The 60 is a whole different story though, requiring an almost complete tear down and a lot of elbow grease to get all of the crud out. Don't get me wrong here as I really like my 60 as well but the bolt action is just so much easier to deal with.

accuracy is about the same from both as are the trigger pulls(crap). Put a decent scope on them and they will both hit bottle caps on fenceposts at 100 yards all day long. The triggers can be worked easily so that isn't an issue as as far as I am concerned.

Look for an old used Marlin 81DL. Receiver sights, tube magazine, feeds shorts, longs and LRs. They sell for less than $100 in Canada.

I have a Remington 541-T, a Marlin M60 SS and a Marlin M101 single shot T-bolt, all 22 rimfire. If I need to grab one to dispatch a small varmint, it always seems to be the single shot. I toss a round into the port, close the bolt, grab the T-bolt and I'm ready. I don't leave my weapons loaded or bullets in clips.
That's just me.

An old Mossberg bolt .22 is a GREAT gun. Not the prettiest, but the barrels are excellent and accuracy is too. Available for good prices.

I second this opinion! I would rather have an old Mossy than any of the new cheap stuff and would about give odds that it will still outshoot any of em!

I agree with powwowell. I searched all around the net and researched all sorts of options. After posting here and getting even more information I settled on the Marlin 981T, Synthetic Stock. I really love the feel of the rifle, the weight and balance feel good. The trigger has no detectable creep and is very crisp (to me anyway). There is just one little thing I need to mention...

I haven't had time to get to the range to shoot it! :(
I have had it a couple months and haven't even broken it in yet.

Well, that is my 2 cents.

Look into the Mossberg Plinkster. I have the semi-auto one. It's fun for alittle over 100 bucks at Wal Mart.

Bolt action 22LR w/tubular magazine: Watch for a Remington 582, Mossberg 802 Plinkster, or the Marlin 981T. The detachable magazine fed 22 rifles are generally more popular and easier to find.
