Why does everyone hate Taurus so much? Are they still poorly made to this day? The 809 looks like a well designed pistol.

I went and handled some of the aforementioned autos on my lunch break today, really liked the P30 and the M&P, Glock was nice but didn't blow me away, and the Sig didn't do anything for me. Haven't had the chance to put my paws on the taurus yet but have read some good reviews on them, still curious what the disdain for that company is all about.

I like DA first shot, SA consecutive, as this will be a both home defense and target shooting gun.
Well, that would take the Glock, Springfield XD, and the S&W M&P off the list.

Which leaves these fine options:

Ruger P95
CZ 75 SP-01 Phantom
EAA Witness Polymer
MRI Polymer Baby Desert Eagle

My personal pick of those 4 is the Ruger P95....

The beef with Taurus stems from their hit-and-miss quality.
Some folks have no problems with their Taurus pistols, but it seems that there just as many Taurus owners who have had nothing but trouble from their pistol.
The have earned a rather checkered reputation when it comes to making reliable firearms.

Good luck,

Steyr M9

Steyr M9 or newer M9-A1- by far the best pistol not mentioned yet. I've owned or tried most of those others mentioned - Steyr is my fav by far!!!

CZ P-07 Duty fits all your criteria. It's called duty but more of a compact, great ergonomics, 16+1... the only thing you may be able to gripe about is if you wear it IWB without an undershirt... you will have a roughed up side of the body from the grip being so nicely textured.

if you never intend to holster/CCW it, the glock is the best non-SAO trigger I've shot (I'm a new shooter, ~350rds over the last 2 months, just finally bought my pistol, a P2000 9mm/LEM, over the weekend).

if you ever intend to use the same gun for holster/ccw use (even holstering at the range imo), then I'd recommend the P30 LEM as a #1 pick. Springfield XD as a #2 pick (I don't much like the trigger). the P30 also has 27 permutations of grip configuration and is frequently cited as the most ergonomically friendly pistol on the face of the planet, so...(can't buy it in CA, or I would have)

M&P 9 would be high on my list if you are looking full size. So would the FNP 9. I saw several brand new FNP 9s in desert tan at a gun show this past weekend for $399.

I have a Glock 19 which is a good pistol, but if the M&P or FN was in the same size range as the GLock 19, I would have bought one of those instead.

Glock G19 deserves it's reputation, it deserves another look. Besides it's performance the G19 will accept almost all Glocks 9mm magazines, mags range from $19-25 in my area H&K, SIG, Walther mags $35-49ea. Glock G19 nothing fancy, certainly not a $500+ billboard like a Springfield XD. If a tupperware gun could be called classic the G19 - G17 would be the ones, not SIG, H&K, FNH, Walther, etc. Glock G19, Or buy an all metal SIG P229, or CZ PCR.

Get a Glock 34. I bought mine used, last week for $550, and it shoots and looks great, my first Glock and I really like it. Patrick

Someone may have mentioned it, but I didn't see it. Smith & Wessons SW9VE, "Sigma". About the same size as a Glock 19. 16 rounds in the magazine, one in the chamber. D/A trigger. Yes, the trigger gets a lot of flack here and there, but it's not a deal stopper to me. It seemed heavy at first, but either it's smoothed up a lot from firing or I've gotten used to it.

A little more than half the price of a Glock at my gun store.

Thanks for the input guys, just gonna buy the right thing the first time, getting an H&K P30L today, and a Viridian X5L Laser/Light combo :)

CZ P-07....
compact, 16 rounds, great shooter, good ergo's, CZ reliability, and option for decocker or thumbsafety... all around a hell of a gun and for less $$$$ than a Glock.

Sounds like you picked a great handgun.
Post some pics when you get the chance and give us a range report.

Happy shooting,
