I just set up a Mossberg 500 for my eight-year-old and now I need some loading data. I have the Lyman fourth edition for the shotshell reloading. Has anyone found a load in this book that would be good for a youth?

I'm not sure if it's in the book but I've been loading 18~ grains of titewad under a WAAsl and 7/8oz shot. No recoil and it smacks the targets hard. YMMV

Any idea what shot weight you're looking for? Also what's he doing with it: trap, skeet, hunting, etc.

I have tried out most of the 7/8oz loads if you're looking for light ones and nearly all of them worked just fine. Still working on a few 3/4oz loads so no suggestions there.

My personal go to currently is Remington STS hull, 17.5gr Red Dot (or Promo), WAA12L wad, and a Win209 primer. It's not the absolute lightest shooting round you can find, but all of my guns shoot it well so I stuck with it. Page 156 out of the Lyman's 5th Edition Shotshell manual if you're intested.

What kinda hulls, Grubby ?

I've got the same book, and loaded A LOT of the loads in there.

If you are using remmies, turn to page 156 - theres a 17.5 RED DOT load thats REALLY light. I loaded these for squirrel for my wife this year- they are like shooting a pop gun.

Right now I have some new Fiocchi hulls but I am willing to buy what ever. We are shooting clay pigeons so they don't have to be much of any thing, I am just throwing rabbits for him by hand. I bought him some Winchester loads at wally world and he shoots them without complaint, but I can tell they are pushing him around quite a bit.

Unfortunately, the Fio hull doesn't get much of a nod in the Lyman book.

Any, really.......

All of the published data I have on Fio hulls is for buckshot- and its not what I'd call Mild.

Fiochhi does make a reduced recoil 7/8th oz factory load, a blue hulled trainer.

I bet you if you called them, they could put you on the right track.

The Lyman book REALLY likes Federal hulls. It also is very proud in the STS department- which is just a shined up gun club hull with a better propensity for repeated crimping.

Is there a better book? I started out reloading shot gun and this was my first book. I have not looked into others, the shop I bought my stuff at said that the Lyman book was the one to have and as you can guess, the only one they had.

I would think the lighter the shot weight the less recoil so 7/8 -1oz would be great with me.

I'm using Lyman's newest shotshell manual, The Lyman 5th Edition Shotshell Reloading Handbook. It's a good manual as are all the Lyman manuals but that doesn't guarantee it will have the data you are looking for. I also cross reference with the Hodgdon online data site when using Hodgdon, IMR or Winchester powders and the Alliant online site when using Alliant powders.

Try using 3/4oz of shot at 1200 fps - Use 17 gr ofTitewad or an equal load of ExtraLite in a Gun Club hull with the Claybuster wad, a Nobel, Cheddite, Winchester or similar primer. That load works my Beretta A400 gas guns and delivers 10/22 like recoil

Ditto to oneounce load. 3/4 ounce 12 gauge is the way to go for light recoiling loads that will break clays on the skeet or 16 yard trap line (or equivalent) all day long without getting a sore shoulder.

Look on the Alliant website or Hodgdon website for load data. Alliant Extra Lite is the go to powder for light payloads, but Red Dot/Promo will also work fine, you just need a little more. Titewad is the proper Hodgdon powder (Clays is also good, but unavailable now). You can also get by with lots of 700-X recipes for 3/4 ounce on Hodgdon's website.

Just realize that the load data listed is typically too LIGHT. I had to go up a grain or two to get my velocity (as verified by a chrono); add in the fact that a MEC drops light as well and you run the risk of loading TOO light if you just go by the MEC bushing chart and by the Alliant or ClayBuster data without verifying powder drops with a scale and velocity with a chrono

Is there a better book?

Not particularly- Fio hulls just aren't really well represented for shot anywhere.

I've used the Lee bushing tables with great success in anything I've used them for.

The Hodgdon site is great for you, apparently !

I've used a lot of their data- and they've apparently expanded the shot/hull selection quite a bit since I last checked ! I would go there Immediately.

Another source to check with would be Ballistic Products. They do quite a bit with Fiocchi hull loads.

I looked the Hogdon site over last night and it is looking pretty good. I did find a load on the wads I am going to try tonight.

I shoot CAS competition and we use reduced recoil loads for match ammo. Most folks I know use a load the is the same as the Winchester AA Low Noise Low Recoil. It is in 12g 7/8 oz shot, Win 209 primer, grey wad and 14.5 grains of Clays powder. I use a #25 MEC powder bushing. It knocks down the targets and breaks the clay fliers that are used as well.

We have a lot of young shooters and this works pretty well for them.

I also apparently overlooked the one small section in the lyman book with fio hulls, grubby : P 149 has 7/8th oz loads- but Ive never used any of those.

Glad you found something you can stuff together with the components you have !

I am going to load some of those rounds tonight to see how they do. So far the biggest pain is getting the crimp on the AA hulls right. I tried them once before and gave up on them because they were such a pain. The Fiocchi hulls seem to be easy to set up for and get to crimp well.
