Looking for a good 'car gun'

I am thinking a Hi point carbine in 9mm .40 should be small enough to fit inside a duffel bag. The gun is only 32 1/2" so an overly large duffel bag should fit it easily. and it being a long gun with only a 10 round mag should keep you outa trouble with the law in most states.

I got a spare plain barrel for my 1100 trap gun, and cut it down to legal length. I have taken it and both barrels when I traveled. It can go to the range or be used for protection in my motel room.

For those blue states, can you have any kind of gun???

Interesting that you say bag for a chair. My uncle keeps his AR in a bag like that (unloaded) and it fits perfectly.

For those that don't know, this...

I actually travel by car quite a lot. The idea of carrying my Mossy 500, SKS, AR etc. in and out of a hotel room is a non-starter. They are big and they are heavy, I have carried my SU16C when traveling in the car, but it requires a bigger bag to store it when moving in and out of a hotel.

Me likee!

How much was that setup if you don't mind telling...

Except for the inexpensive part (I don't know what price range you want) the Kel Tec Sub 2000 shown above is what I was going to recommend. You should be able to get one for $350.00 or less. I think I paid $329 each for the 2 I have.

It shoots a pistol caliber cartridge (9 or 40) and they're sold with a ten round magazine, which should be legal in any state you're in. You can get higher capacity magazines for places where they're allowed.

Mossberg 500. Short (w/ pistol grip only or stock folded), relatively cheap, reliable, easy to tote in car and to/from hotel.

This is my traveling long gun. In take-down it easily stashes under a car seat, in a small suitcase, backpack, whatever. Takes down in 2 seconds and re-assembles in 2 seconds. Reliable. Potent. Nice companion to sidearms when on the road.

I don't believe in "car" or "truck" guns......if that means the gun lives in the vehicle.

Guns, even cheap ones, can KILL. If my vehicle gets stolen or broken into, I don't want the thief to have any gun........especially if the gun is MINE.

My "car gun" is the one I specifically carry with me on a specific trip. When I get into the car, so does the gun. When I leave the car (like for the motel stay) so does the gun.

A good low-key gun for motel defense is a double barreled 12 or 20 guage Coach gun. These break down into small pieces allowing a low profile to and from the room.

I favor a handgun, perhaps backed up by a Mini-14 with folding stock in a tennis racket case.....but they do not live in the car !!!

You don't believe in car/truck guns? I can assure you, they do exist.:)

But I believe guns don't kill people, people kill people. And when I have to make one of my weekly trips into a federal building, my EDC stays in the car/truck.

A lot of people suggest the single or double or O/U shotgun because they can be made very short.

And, they are very reliable.

If you cut the barrel down to 18.5" you can also shorten the stock just remember to keep it over 26" total.

The action on the break open shotgun is much shorter than the pump or semi-auto - these have another 4 or 5 inches behind the barrel chamber for the bolt to cycle shells.

Do you really think you will need more than 2 shots? And if so the double barrel re-loads pretty easily.

I favor the new short barrelled Over Unders but go with what feels good to you.

Serbu Super Shorty 9 12GA
Price: $699.99
Manufacturer: SERBU
Impact Item #: SER-SS12
Call for lead time.

The SUPER-SHORTY is based on a Mossberg Cruiser 12-gauge shotgun which came from the factory with a pistol grip. Because of this, the SUPER-SHORTY is considered an AOW (Any Other Weapon) and can be transferred with a $5 stamp! The gun holds two 2-3/4" or 3" (if you like pain) shells in the magazine, plus one in the chamber. The 16.5" overall length, 6.5" barrel and spring-loaded foregrip, which pivots out of the way when not in use, make for a very compact package.
If you like the idea of concealed carry with a 12-gauge, or like a lot of "bang" in a small package, or just like a lot of muzzle flash, then this is the gun for you.

(NOTE: Not available in CA and some other states. Federal background check required.)

I see a lot of the Universal 30 cal carbines for sale around here.

It's short enough to for 'car' use and with a 30 round magazine would have plenty of firepower.
YES!

Semi-auto, 30-round mags and SUPER penetration w/ FMJ!

I used to have one of the Paratrooper copies for my car; wish I'd never sold it!

I prefer a sub-$300 price, stainless steel, .38 revolver for a dedicated truck/car gun. In the event that it is lost, stolen, or destroyed, I can't have a Serbu in that roll. Inexpensive, but not cheap. Stainless to help prevent corrosion. .38spl because I reload that. Revolver so that it will always be ready to go and I don't have to consider an unseated mag, empty chamber, etc.

Here's the Stoeger Coach Gun in take-down. Push one lever and the forestock comes off, push the action lever and the barrel drops down and comes off. Two-seconds! Longest piece (the barrel) is 20".

This gun has had a little custom work done. The action is slicked up so it actuates very quickly and easily. The automatic "safety-on" mechanism is disabled so I can put the safety on or off as I wish... and reload without the safety coming back on automatically. This is the base model which didn't originally come with a butt pad, so I had one installed. Lastly, the chambers are polished so empty hulls fall right out with just a rearward jerk of the gun. I feel these tweaks are pretty much a "must-do" with the Coach gun, making it just right. Small price to pay to get the gun where it should be.

All I need now for it now is a small, discreet, 22" soft gun case:

I carry a Keltec Sub 2000 with the Glock 19 magwell.

9mm Sub 2000 was my first thought. Easily portable, fits in a briefcase or backpack, and isn't a pistol. If magazine capacity is an issue in the locations you travel to/through, you could always stick to the 10 rounders.

Mag capacity IS an issue. That's why I go with the 33 rounders!

Many are two joined at the hip with the 12ga for SD , particularly in short and or light guns . What isn't going to stop when hit with a 20ga buckshot load ? Near twice the energy of a .357 magnum the #3 buckshot load of the 20ga. is plenty .

Advantage over the 12ga. - lighter, more compact, and easier to swing.

If I was going to war I would probaby choose the 12ga. , but for self defense the 20ga. is a better choice in my opinion. Youth model Remington 870, Mossberg 500 with the barrel removed (in take down mode) makes a short package and plenty effective for the OP's purpose. Perhaps more politicaly sellable in some of those anti states as well. 21" youth barrel is not a sawed off shotgun , not a sub machinegun looking thing, and hell - if I didn't make my point by now , no use babbling. :D

mnrivrat... I agree with you. A 20 ga. can be very effective as well. And a better choice for those wishing to reduce recoil. All of my shotguns are 12 ga. but I'm seriously considering a 20 ga. for just this purpose. That would make it easier for my wife to handle as well.

One of the big problems with a 20 guage for personal defense is finding suitable defense ammo for it.

I'm guessing that it's best to find a good source online and order up a couple of cases of the good stuff. Finding such ammo locally can be impossible. But I've bought a lot of premium defense ammo online over the years.
