OK, there have been several threads about carry guns, and bedroom guns but what guns do you keep in your vehicle?

For years I lived in one state and worked in another and it was illegal for me to carry in the state I worked in or even keep a handgun locked in the car. To make me feel better I used to keep an unloaded and trigger-locked 12 gauge in the trunk thinking I at least I had access to something during my travels.

I no longer cross state lines for my job so I do carry most days but there seem to be more and more days when I can't due to where I might be during the day and it is illegal for me to leave a handgun locked in the car.

So I am thinking about redeploying the Benelli to trunk duty (or better yet just get another one).

Who here keeps a shotgun/rifle in thei vehicle and what is it?

Amongst my many,...and because of my work and travels,..I routinely have a double rifle case containing an NEF single shot breakdown in 20 gauge with a mix of birdshot/buck and slugs,..along with it's companion, a scoped Handi Rifle Single in .308, with about 30 rounds, and a Ruger Single Six with a box of .22 LR and another of .22 WMR. I often find myself in wide tracts of state and national forest land in northen Michigan and the UP. I regularly carry a 9mm sidearm anyways,...so I figure that'll cover the bases,... if I need to put down a road kill, or find something to eat if I am stuck back on a two tracker or in a camp for any extended period and can't walk out for whatever reason,...or just feel like plinking or getting an opportunity to hunt.

I would love to be able to carry a firearm in my car. Here is Arkansas you can do it, as long as its unloaded. As I work in a prison, a firearm in the car is out of the question; the prison parking lot is a no firearms zone. If I were free to have a weapon, I guess I would take my old, beat up ex-Yugoslav Mauser in 8mm: no tears if it got stolen.

I have a gun on my body any time I am clothed...
Therefore I either have a .44 or .45 in the truck whenever I am in it.
And my wife has either her .44 or .45 in there when she is in it.

Lately its just an old beat up and very reliable Heritage .22 SA with a 6.5" for the truck. SA's, dogs and trucks seem to go together in my book:D Mike

Shady if I can figure out how to fold down the seat can I shoot it. I have the same set up in the same truck. That space was built for a truck gun.

Winchester 1300

With a 22" bore-barrel and iron sights, loaded with 00 Buck, behind the seat of my daily-driver Ford Pickup.

I'm pleased with this configuration.

I would prefer an M-1 carbine, but the one I own is an heirloom, and I don't want it confiscated by an ignorant cop.

I started keeping an SKS in the trunk. It's a great, reliable rifle with some punch, and if it ever got snagged, I could replace it very easily. I'll Tapco it a little bit this spring.

We here in Missouri welcome you all. Please feel free to carry any lawfully owned firearm, anywhere in your vehicle, in any manner you choose, wherever you may be from.

I personally have a 6" Ruger GP100 in my center console, but since the quote "A handgun is for fighting your way back to your rifle", makes good sense to me, I'm thinking of getting an SKS to keep behind the seat instead.

My carry gun goes on with the pants. A 640 S+W for work days, A 1911 on all others. I would like to have A secure lockable scabbard that is accessable when the drivers seat it tilted forward.
for A long gun.
Too many thieves down here to just put it behind the seat.

I would love to come to Missouri. The gun laws in Fl are good but I am sick of So. Fl. Been here 22 years now. The place would be unrecognizable to someone who left here then.
Any work in Mo?

Badlander,
As much as I love living in the great state of Missouri, and the gun laws are some of the best, (the only things we don't have is unlicenced CCW, and full pre-emption which allows municipalities to ban "open" carry) the unemployment rate is skyrocketing higher than the national average  leading to an increased rate of break-ins and theft. (Also leading to more dead burglars).
Even in my rural area, there has been a recent arrest of a couple who have broken into over 60 (60!) houses, stealing over 150 (150!) firearms.
More than ever before, this leaves me more than a little wary of having my vehicle randomly broken into and my "truck gun" disappearing. I liked the idea of Cannonball888's of "one in the pizza-box better than two in the trunk." Yet, a pizza box is not very secure. (Can't fit a rifle in it anyway) I am currently weighing the options of securing my truck gun while still providing easy access. My Ruger in the center console will probably be the first place a potential robber will look. I've already mentioned I will be switching this out in favor of an SKS, yet I'm unaware of any means to secure this in my particular vehicle. My truck doesn't have fold down seats. My rear seat folds up in two halves with a center divider beam, leaving no way to put a rifle under there. I've seen an over the seat "bag" that holds the rifle against the back of the (front) seats, yet I don't see a way of locking this. I've searched, yet am still unable to find anything I like.

Anyone see anything I'd be interested in?

When I kept my Benelli in my vehicle previously I had an SUV and used a cable lock through the open action connected to a bicycle cable padlocked around one of the "feet" of the rear seat. Not perfect but better than nothing.

When I think of leaving a gun in a locked car, I have to consider that a large fraction of stolen guns are stolen from vehicles. I do not want to leave a lethal prize for some bad guy to take from my vehicle.

I am fortunate to live in southeast part of the U.S. I have had concealed weapons permits in LA, MS, AL, and now GA. With a concealed weapons permit, I see no reason to have a car gun in addition to the pistol that I carry. I think GA has reciprocity with all states in the SE except SC.

truck

I usually pack at least two on me, a mouse and a full size.
In my truck is typically a shotgun with a bandolier of ammo.
just need to get to it.

For years I've kept a long gun and a handgun or two in my vehicles, 24/7.

At present I have a Red Dot equipped Kel Tec SU-16CA .223 in my car and a scoped SKS in my truck.

I used to have shotguns in the vehicles but after taking note of many, "what if I need it here" scenarios, I decided that most of the time the short range and shot dispersion would be a problem. So now I carry rifles.

I second the concern about theft from the vehicle. I only carry guns that have a value of under $250 so that if they are stolen I can replace them right away and won't go through angst about it.

When thinking trunk guns my concerns are mostly whacko shooters such as the Tyler, Tx dude and others. That and a backup weapon and extra weapon in case (unlikely) that whoever I riding with is unarmed.

Good choices for me:

$100
Mosin- Will pierce most armor under level V but is huge and heavy. This makes it hard to store in a vehicle and bring into play quickly. They are cheap though.

$200
HiPoint Carbine 9mm- Semi-auto, small, light, easy to handle, cheap ammo. Will pierce most Level III and under armor. It is maintenance free so if it rusts in the humidity of your vehicle you can ship it to the factory and they will fix it for free. Max range is around 70 yards.

Best choice $250-300
Remington 740 Series- Will pierce most armor under Level V, is semi auto and a bit shorter/ lighter than the milsurps (if in .30-06 also has cheap ammo). Available in pawnshops everywhere. Don't overpay for it. The only draw back is the small magazine size (5rds). That can be remedied by buying a 10 rounder.

Anything more expensive is out for me. I don't use shotguns for trunk guns because if I really need a rifle when I am out on the road I want all the power and range I can get. For me this means a .30 caliber or better rifle. Also with the tendency for whacko shooters to go up-armored these days you want something that has a good chance to go through body armor.

As of late, a 3" bbl .44 Mag in the map-pocket of my truck door. My wife keeps a .38 Snub in her SUV.

Model 92 lever rifle in 45LC. Large capacity, instant tactical reload - and cowboys are a lot less likely to get shot by LE. In case of zombie attack, just grab your hat and your rifle!

I don't carry one in my car. I work on a government site that does not allow weapons of any type (along with a whole host of other restrictions) to come on to the site. This is for security reasons which I agree with so I am good with it.

However, if I was in a position where I could carry a gun in my car I would have a Mini-14 mounted in my trunk and probably a pistol in a locked container under the driver's seat.

Leaving one in the trunk or behind the seat, no, but I have been known to throw my Enfield in the trunk with a bandolier of ammo. Very very low theft/resale value, but priceless to me if I need it - very accurate rifle. That's for long trips, other wise the sidearm does it, and ditto, Blackhand, the Dept has NO sense of humor about firearms inside the perimeter that aren't supposed to be there. We have weapons lockers at Traffic Control to store our off duty sidearms - we have standard LEO carry authority in AZ.
