looking for a load for a 44 mag

How long have you reloaded ammo? Have you had good luck reloading? Get a couple of reloading books and read them, when finished, re-read them again. For safety's sake, I don't believe any of us will give you grain for grain info, legalities kinda get in the way, you know...... and scott5 had some pretty good questions too, might ponder a little longer.....

Alliant, Hodgedon, Accurate, & Ramshot powder companies all have websites listing powder data for all their powders in all the major calibers.

try handloads.com that's where I got a lot of my data when I started, but if you do, please be careful, I am not entirely convinced all of the loads some people post are safe in all guns. cabelas also sells some paper bound books caliber specific very inexpensive. I bought the 44mag and 357mag ones, and found them to be extremely useful, despite the cheap appearance (they look like something you could whip up at a copy store). each of them has a LOT of load data for its caliber.

Buy a Lyman #49 loading manual and read it three or four times.
It has all the .44 MAg load data you could possibly need.

Getting newby load data off the internet is akin to playing with PO'd rattlesnakes if you don't have a good manual for a proper frame of referance.

Before you start you have to decide what you want to use the loads for. For shooting at the range which is mostly what I do I don't use hot loads, for hunting I want something hotter.

What's interesting is for all the .44 mags I have I have never shot a mag load out of any of them. I see no reason to load that hot for 95% of my use. Most of what I load and shoot falls somewhere between the Spl and Mag power levels.

Yep, get the manual. It is essential.

OK, for full power loads with a 240 gr. non lead bullet, I load 24 grs. of WW296 or H110, this is moreorless a standard load for the 44 mag. Target or plinking loads, 7.5-8 grs of Unique with 240 gr. lead or fmj's. These are shot out of my Super Blackhawk Ruger handgun.

Warmed up 44 spl

Was thinking about a warm 44 special for my 44 mag in a S&W 29 3 6'' 8 or 8.5 of Unique with a mag tech Jfn 240 any comments:confused:

I use that load only with hard cast bullets. It's the perfect all around load imo. Full power just isn't fun to shoot more than a box at a time.

Agreed!

I use 10.0gr Unique under a commercial cast 240gr SWC more than any other. 1100-1200fps is plenty.

Hey Buckeye, that warm .44 special load will be fine --AS LONG, as you use .44 mag brass. Kick that load down to 7.5g if your using .44 Special brass. Awesome thing about unique, it works great for mild to moderate loads . I prefer 2400/H110 for the heavier stuff. But my cast Keiths over 8.5-10g of Unique can handle 95% of anything that pistol is capable of.
