Looking for a long range shooting platform

That's just with the ammo crunch craziness..... But using current ridiculous ammo pricing as a guide isnt a realistic comparison.
I understand what your saying completely except that I want to shoot today and I'm forced to pay the current market rate. I just bought 400 rnds of 308 and saved over $800 compared to 6.5cm at today's market rate. And the selection of 308 bullets for long distance shooting was much better than 6.5cm. $800 savings easily covers converting my 6.5cm 700 to a Remage 308 barrel. If/when 6.5cm drops back to pre-panic prices I'll consider getting a 6.5cm Remage barrel.

All of the gun and ammo companies are moving to 6.5 and 6mm calibers because the new buyers aren't buying as much 308 stuff.

I would choose in the following order Savage for price and accuracy, Tikka for accuracy not to bad on price either and you won't get a 3rd recommendation because I simply do not comment on what I have no experience with.

I don't know if the rifle I own is in your price range (where you live).
But if is, I have nothing but praise for this one:

T3x VARMINT
Chambered in 6,5x55
it has a fat 24" barrel
a very nice trigger
and it easily shoots very accurate out two 1000m (and I think even 1200 would work but have no place to try this)
So your 1000 yard are easily done.
Very smooth shooter, no serious recoil.
I have some Swedish Mausers, too.
But even without them I would never consider 6,5CM

Are buying loaded ammo rather than loading your own?
What possible 308 ammunition are you referring to that is superior to 6.5 Creedmoor for long range shooting? (meaning 1000 yards)

You misread what I wrote. Nowhere did I say 308 was "superior" to 6.5cm. I did say it was significantly cheaper, that is a fact in today's market. I do wonder how much of 6.5cm vs 308 is marketing hype and how much is actual performance.

I decided to do a little research. Looking at the premier long distance bullet manufacturer, Horndy, is interesting. For the precision long distance ELD bullet there are seven 308 versions and eight 6.5cm versions. Overall Hornady make three times as many 308 bullets (65) compared to 6.5cm (22).

So what is the value of 6.5cm vs 308 on the range?

Significantly higher BC for similar weight and velocity. If all you're doing is shooting a known distance in the stable conditions and it's not that big a deal.
Trying to make first round hits in random conditions on targets at random ranges, and it can make a big difference.

At least has been my experience plinking at rocks and other things out farther than my rangefinder can pick up, and in wind conditions that vary from nothing to 20-30 mph gusts.
If I can hit it with the rangefinder and the wind is relatively minimal making a hit with either my 30-06 or my 375 really wasn't that difficult as long as the targets weren't real small. If the wind started blowing though I could still usually make hits with a 280 or 6.5 Creedmoor, but my shots would start to scatter with the 375 and 30-06, which are very similar to the 308 in terms of ballistics.

I'm also not much of a distant shooter so take that into consideration lol.

Tikka TAC A1, I just got one in 260 remington 24" barrel, its heavy but its very accurate smooth bolt and trigger no need to tinker with came with 2 clips.

This has been beat to death but I'll play...

Comparing a 6.5 147 ELD-M at 2700FPS, and a 178 ELD-M at 2600 FPS which are popular loadings.

1000 Yards - 308 is 9", 6.5 is 6" per 1MPH of wind.

500 Yards - the 308 will drift 2" per 1 MPH of wind while the 6.5 will drift half of that.

Shooting inside of 300 yards, the big difference will be what your shoulder feels- a significant reduction in recoil with the 6.5. Recoil can reduce the shooters ability to control the rifle which affects accuracy

Probably half of the rifle shooters out there aren't good enough to know the difference but you get a little gust of 2 to 3MPH of wind change and it makes things pretty tricky.
