I would like to buy a Makarov pistol how ever the ones I see look like they have been pulled down the street behind a pickup truck. Where do you find a nice Makarov? I know very little about these guns so which one do I look for? Thanks for any help. Don

Maks are plenty if you look around. I would look for an East German or Bulgarian in 9x18 for a first Mak.

Browse through makarov.com for loads of info. There is also a Makarov forum on gunboards.com

Are you looking specifically for a Makarov or perhaps are you open to options? I ask as the CZ-82 can still be found for a more than fair price. Most seem to be rather lacking in finish, but mechanically they're solid.

I understand the East German Makarov is considered the cream of the crop, being more refined in practically every regard.
From a functional standpoint, a Bulgarian Makarov should serve as a fine example of the species.

I have a .380(9x17) Russian Makarov with target sites(adj. back site). Don't remember when it was but I think around 1994-'96?
This is a IJ-70 version . I have both boxes,1 10rd. mag. extra smaller grip, cleaning rod and a tool to take it apart. All papers that came with it.
I didn't want to mess with the 9x18. Couldn't re-load them cause of the Berdan primer and metal casings.
Here's a link about this gun:...http://www.chuckhawks.com/baikal_IJ-70_syn.htm
I don't have a pic yet; getting camera fixed. It was a novelity gun for me. I'd get alot of ??s about it. I've shot maybe 200-300rds. I hate re- loading those casings.
PM me if interested.
In the article it has it as a 8 rd. Mine is a 10 rd. dbl. stack. Wider grip.

"9x18 is easily reloaded with 9mm luger brass" ????? Except that the 9mm Luger is 1mm too long, way undersized in diameter, and is designed for .355 dia. bullets instead of the the Mak's .363-.364 dia. bullets.

Actually, the 9x19 is a tapered round. Trim off the 1mm using a lee case length gauge, and full length size to remove the taper, and you have a perfect case for use with a 9x18.

Yes the 9mm is a tapered sidewall and the bullet is smaller in diameter than the 9x18 so please be careful.

Mine is just sitting here, loaded with original military ammo, not doing nutting. Want it? or Trade? I'm in Texas
It's a good shoot gun with original issue shoulder hostler cleaning tool and three loaded clips and I think a box of ammo.
Shoots fine

Reasonable price? Varies from state to state. $150 to $225 for an IJ70 series. $200 to $280 for a Bulgarian. $250 to $400 for an East German, depending on condition. $300 to $500 for a Chinese. This last one fetches a high price due to rarity. Condition isn't so important with this type. Those are what I'd be willing to pay, or would ask if I was selling one.

I recently bought a Bulgarian for $180 that looks immaculate and , I realize this next one is not a makarov but shoots the 9x18 round, a P64 for $160 in good condition.

I bought a bulgarian makarov off J&G sales. it was $230 and although has a little wear on the outside, the bore looks great and I don't think more than 100 rounds were ever shot through it.

Tell that to all the guys who reload for it all the time with no problems.

Did yu sell it? Where you at in Texas?

Get a real 9mm, what's with the resurgance of a gun that 10 yrs ago they couldn't give away at gun shows, $100 a pop, cases of them, it is no better than a 380, and too big a clunker, you will tire of it in a month, get a nice new 9mm.

Gym, that sums up completely how I feel about revolvers
yet they still seem to be making them, even thought the whole concept has been outdated for more than 100 years...

Anywho, don't expect sympathies, I don't, but I would like true a Mak, someday, I see it like an engineering masterpiece, how FEW parts can you make a gun with. I think they won... Oh, and they are cool, and sexy little chunks of commie steel.

They sold all they could at $100, and they didn't stay at $100 a pop for long. Then the sold all they could at $150, and then the supply started drying up because of import restrictions and finally the lack of any new production.

Now they are commanding increasingly higher prices as the demand is exceeding the finitie supply. Sure there may be better CCW guns in better caliabers, but the performance, history, and accuracy of the true Makarov is outstanding, and they are still a good value in old world, steal prodcution.
