Sounds like you'd be perfectly suited for a Gyro-Jet........
I'll take one with the nickel finish, walnut grips, 50rnd extended magazine, and a holographic sight please! lolz...

Actually i'll be looking at a cz52 9mm converted in the morning. it'll be the first time i've actually seen a converted one. Id only heard whispers before today... wonder what id do with all that 7.62x25 ive got stashed? hmmm.....

Are you looking for a practical, serious carry piece that may be called on to save your life "in the gravest extreme"? Or are you looking for a barbecue gun?

Remember, if you ever have to use the gun for real, it may be held as evidence, at least during the initial investigation. Depending on a lot of variables, you may get it back in a few days, a few months, or never. If you do get it back, it may have a police property number crudely electro-penciled onto it. So you might want to think twice about carrying a valuable collector's item.

Also, while I can see electing to carry a pistol that has a bit of character, even some panache, that would be pretty far down my list of considerations, far below a lot of more practical ones. Caliber and ergonomics are most important to me.

I would recommend either a CZ 82 loaded with Buffalo Bore +P ( the Czechs designed it for a +P load), or a Bulgarian Makarov. Both are good pistols that have some character, yet have little collector value. Better yet, take a good look at the P7 series.

I think most of the good choices have been listed. Since you're going to carry it, you need it to be reliable, even if it's a novel design.

Others have covered most of my other suggestions, so allow me to make one. A P-83. There aren't a lot of them in the country, they're reliable, and they're definitely unique looking. Here's a pic. SOG has them for under $200 with 2 mags.

Here's another. P-64. Definitely more common than the P-83, but also more compact. Heavy DA trigger (somewhat fixable with a spring swap), but EXCELLENT SA trigger, like 1911 with a good trigger job good. They are on a variety of surplus sites too for under $200.

Overall, i think the coolest and classiest "novelty" ccw would be a pristine (or refinished) Colt 1908. But you're gonna pay for one.

I think i may have a problem... as a result of this thread i've bought a Makarov, a CZ-52 (with 9mm conversion!), and a shiny new hi-power..... and now im broke:(

you might be a gun nut if.........

I think "novelty" is meant more in the sense of "unusual/unique design" than frivolous or "toy-like." I regard the tiny mini-revolvers as examples of the latter. An unusual design handgun that is still a viable defensive sidearm is the Beretta 86, a large (for the .380 ACP) pistol that has a tipup barrel and selective double or single action.

What about a Walther P38/1 or a Nagant revolver. Those are the only two I can think of off the top of my head. I believe someone already mentioned the VZ 52 pistol that is pretty unique. Maybe a three inch barreled Smith 500? just a thought.

the BHP is quite carryable
For an effective, novelty CCW. I would choose a Browning Hi-Power or a Ruger LCP.

BHPs are almost as far from being novelty guns as 1911s, LOL.

Might I suggest a C.O.P.? It is a larger calber, .357, designed as a BUG, not a whole lot made.

Personally, I don't like mine, but it is a unique gun.

P38 is kind of large for carry, and isn't made for +P stuff, so most modern jhp designs are out.

Nagant revolver.. eh. it's very thin and would be easy to carry IWB, and 32 h&r mag (which it can take) isn't all THAT weak, but the DA trigger is so freakin heavy that it's just not worth it.

A good use for a Nagant revolver is as a "tacklebox," "toolbox," or "truck" gun that you really don't worry or care about. If it gets stolen, eh, you're out $90. Who cares? Lol.

I had a nice, late issue Walther P1 (P38) that fed hollow points just fine. It is not recommended with +P's, but it would be a novel gun to carry.

A Micro Eagle perhaps? Gas-assisted blowback operation in a pocket pistol format. Certainly would be a novelty.

I have a WW1 lemon squeezer S&W in 32 short nickle with stag That gets attention as a pocket pistol. Just picked up a 1880 S&W SA 3" top break in 32 short .
A 1955 3" J fram 38spl. Lots of older revolvers out their.

HK VP-70.

Truvelo also invented the shortened 45 round before Glock showed up with it.

I got kicked off of Firing Line for that observation.
