I am looking for YOUR opinion on the best CCW pistol that you have owned/used/ect. Something that is easy to conceal, reliable, and has enough power for self defense (9mm at the least). And please no "the one you have on you" answers; I realize that. I want to make sure that "the one I have on me" is the best one that I can have on me.

Next, I'd like your opinion on the best overall pakcage. The gun that best combines the ease of carrying, use for home defense, fun at the range, ect.

Now, I know I'm going to get a lot of 1911 answers and that's fine. But pretty please, name another gun along with the 1911 :D

best overall package for me that I've fired, owned, etc. is a P7M8 when considering it really shines as an IWB CCW piece. Awesome fun at the range, good for home defense in the sense that it'll give you 9 good chances to get back to the real boomstick, etc. = icing on the cake.

Others that are just as good (IMO) but I don't have?

G23 or G19 w/ .22 conversion

LW Commander w/ .22 conversion

The best CCW has to be the Rohrbaugh R9S (pictured below) which is presently the smallest & lightest 9mm in production. It is a fine quality gun holding 6+1 rounds of 9mm Parabellum which can be carried when other guns can't ...

... The best overall package for me is the Smith & Wesson 3913TSW (pictured above) -- it's the best COMPACT 9mm around IMHO because it isn't too small nor is it too big.

There's a plethora of combos out there that’ll fit the bill.

Here’s mine: Kahr K9 loaded with Winchester 147gr Rangers.

Though I have found myself carrying my Taurus M85CH loaded with 135gr +P Speer Gold Dots in my boot more often than not.

Anyway, I don’t see myself switching in terms of pistol/bullet combo (unless PeaceKeeper Arms offers a concealable field-grade pulse pistol like Crichton’s Wynona, albeit a tad smaller).

Best Overall CCW Package?

Greeting's All-

I won't waste time recommending a 1911, since it doesn't seem
that you are particulary interested in that type of firearm.

But, I will recommend the world class DA/SA SIG-SAUER P220A
in .45 ACP. Learn to master the SIG's double-action first shot and
everything else will come naturally. Although this is a full size
weapon, it conceals very easily; even for large folks like myself
(5'10" - 210 lbs). One word sets this choice apart from all others:
RELIABILITY, as these weapons are stone cold reliable. That is
why the U.S. Dept. Of Homeland Security chose SIG-SAUER
firearms to arm their personel.

FootNote: Weapon weight = 27 ozs. unloaded

A Glock 36 in the pocket aint what I would call concealed :)

Good one guys!

My favorite is the Colt CCO......
Another fave is the Sig 245....
I really like my girlfriends Kahr PM9.
If the Glocks fit your hand(they don't mine), all the ones I have tried work pretty good! They just be chunky.

The smallest handgun that I carry is the Glock 27 (.40), but I like the capacity of my Glock 19 (9mm) which holds 15 rounds. I also carry a Sig 229 in .40 that holds 12 rounds.

It depends on season and clothing.

Of all the guns that I've toted, there were a handful whose weight, balance, capacity, and size made them contenders for the "best overall package".

In the SA division, it's an alloy-framed Commander, or capable Brand K/S/P copy thereof.

In the crunchenticker division, it's the SIG P239. I think it's the best civilian CCW piece available on the market. Small, light, easy to handle, easy to conceal, smooth, reliable, accurate, and available in three effective calibers.

In the plastic division, it's the Glock 19/23. Lightweight, reliable, tough as nails, holds a lot of bullets, and very easy to carry.

In the roundgun division, it's a 3" heavy-barreled Magnum K-frame with fixed sights, like the S&W Model 65 or 13. Easier to conceal than the bigger L- and N-frames, and easier to shoot well than the smaller J-frames.

The Navy SEALs still carry SIGs, as does the U.S. Secret Service. I'm sure they get into the occasional gunfight.

Glock 19 in a Sidearmor IWB is the best I've had. A close runner-up to the Sidearmor is the Hume H715M IWB. I'll typically carry one spare mag in a Hume belt clip mag pouch. This is my all-purpose carry rig. Easy enough to hide. Many times during the summer, I'll go to a G26 in a Hume 715M (this is just b/c I happen to have one of these, but if it came down to only one of these, I'd keep the 19).

Rohrbaugh is a great choice; accurate, tiny, flat and reliable if you are not at all prone to limp wristing and use WWB and GDHP

Glock 19 is amazing and with full caps has a lot of ammo, is accurate and because of the polygon barrel will shoot bullets at the same and higher chrono speeds as much larger pistols.

BHPs are great because they are flat, full cap, accurate and cheap.

And now, let the flames begin, Kel-Tec 357 SIG conversion of the P11 with 12 rounds of almost nuclear energy from this amazing caliber in a tiny package... if you can wait until one comes up for sale. There are not many out there and there never were.

With all due respect, before 9-11 I couldn't agree with you
more; that price was a major factor.

But after 9-11, I think a totally reliable package was in order
and on everyone's mind. Not to say that SIG-SAUER firearms
are the only reliable weapons; but they rank in a group
that inludes H&K's, Browning Hi-Power's, and Glock's.

FootNote: Thanks Marko for reminding everyone that some
federal agencies along with some branches of the U.S.
military still use SIG-SAUER handguns. The U.S. Army
C.I.D. and Naval Intelligence still issue the P228 to my
knowledge.

My opinion:
I have several very capable CCW pistols. But, I find myself carrying the Kahr PM9 most of the time. It is extremely small and light and packs 7 rounds of 9mm +p.

For me, it has been the best overall carry package. But there are other guns I enjoy shooting at the range more...like the P7M8. For home defense, I go with a USP .45 Compact.

I think that the BEST overall pistol is the Kimber Compact CDP. Large enough that it is still fun to shoot at the range and be accurate with it. Small enough that it can easily be carried all day long.

I have carried 4 different handguns.

Steyr M40
Kahr MK40
Bulgarian Makarov
Steyr S40

Of those, the Kahr MK40 is hands down the absolute "best" for carrying ... but not the best for shooting and a very limited capacity (5+1).

Overall the best balance of size, comfort, weight, capacity, and power is the Steyr S40 (my current CCW piece).

So, based on my personal experience I'd say that aside from my Steyr S40, the Kahr K or P series pistols would probably fall into that "ultimate CCW Piece" category as well.

IMO, the Colt CCO (or it's competitor's equivelents) is the best "One gun" CCW available.

Why? It holds 7+1 of your favorite 45ACP rounds and can take any reliable 7, 8 or 10 round 1911 mag for a reload. It's got an alloy frame so it's light weight and after a while, you'll forget you're carrying it (something I can't say about my steel framed full size 1911s). It's thin so it's perfect for IWB carry and very comfortable in a good holster (mine's now wearing super thin Alumagrips to make it even thinner). It has a short grip "Officers" frame so the grip doesn't poke out and print, especially when carried at an appreciable cant. It has a "Commander" slide for a longer sight radius than the popular 45ACP compacts and uses a barrel just a hair over 4" so it doesn't lose that much velocity when compared to a full size Govt. model.

Now granted, this is a compromize gun, as most CCWs are. I can't shoot it as accurately as my full size Government model and it doesn't get the same velocity from the 230gr. round as a 5" barrel would. It's also not as light or convenient to carry as my little alloy 38 Special J frame, it doesn't just drop in a pocket on the way out the door. However, I do shoot this gun regularly for fun and have shot it at local run & gun matches. Even though it's light and small, it's still real fun to shoot and I can shoot it very proficiently. That's something I can't say about my little J frame.

Lightweight commander 1911.

Now that that is out of the way. My recommendations, at least for California standard, is the Glock 23.same size as the G19 but with the .40S&W round. Perfection.

..OH s***! did I jus' say that :p

My former favorite carrying piece was my Detonics .45. Excellent accuracy and power, very concealable, 6+1 cap.

Nowadays I carry a Taurus PT-145 Millennium Pro. Not quite as accurate as my old Detonics, (thanks largely to the DAO trigger) but plenty good combat accuracy, 10+1 cap.

The Detonics was all steel, weighs almost as much loaded as the Taurus loaded.

Both are extremely reliable now. The Detonics had to be throated at the factory to feed HP reliably, and the Taurus had to have a couple of hundred rounds put through it to break it in. Both now feed anything I stuff in them.

Glock 19, best overrall carry. 15+1, goes bang when trigger is pulled.

Most versatile that I've owned: Kimber Custom Eclipse II. Runner up, Glock 21 w/standard capacity mags and tritium sites. It's big, making for an easy grip, 13+1 rounds of .45 is comforting, and with night sites it becomes a good nightstand gun in addition to being a fun and accurate shooter right out of the (tupperware) box. Arguably easy to carry, I always toted mine in a fobus paddle or bianchi SOB holster without any problems.

The best in MHO is the P239 from SIG arms, small, light, 100% relliable and much more accurite than many guns twice the size. Also It can be had in 9MM, .357 SIG or .40 s&w. What is not to love.
