Looking for a scope mount solution - SOCOM II

Hello fellas,

I am on a mission to find a a scope mount that will work on my Socom II. I have scoured the internet for a few days in search of several mounts that will work. I usually wouldn't have mounted a scope on this rifle because of its design, but I was given a free brand new Leupold AR Tactical scope..so I'm rolling with it. So now that I have one, I would like to mount it on my rifle. The problem is, that my rifle (pictured below) does not have a rail that extends past the bolt:cuss:. I need a rail that extends backwards and gives me enough rail to mount the scope to get the proper eye relief. I have found several mounts I liked, unfortunately $100 + is out of my price range. I dont care if its a cheaper rail cause this is just a trail thing. If I like the rifle with the scope on it, I will keep it that way. If not, I dont want to be out hundreds of dollars. I have provided several photos below of mounts I like....as well as an illustration of what I am looking for. I would really appreciate your help....however, I don't care to hear about cheek weild issues, rifle not made for a scope issue, and so on.....I simply want to find a good mount for cheap that will work. You will probably need something added to the rear of the stock since it is going to be pretty low to get a cheek weld going. At least that is how it was with my dot I had on there. I imagine a scope would be similar.
 
I carried my Lt.'s SOCOM II around with that stock and it was terribly uncomfortable and akward. I use it for hunting and the standard stock gives it a more comfortable feel. Plus I would never ever pay that much for stock. Thanks for the suggestion, however I think I'll just stick with keeping my "stock" stock and just find a good extension for the scope.
 
Best way to scope a SOCOM II --

1) Take SOCOM II down to local gunstore/gunsmith
2) Sell SOCOM II on consignment
3) Use funds from sale to buy an AR-10 type rifle
4) Scope it however you want.
 
Wow...Sorry I've had an Armalite Ar-10 and it is just like what everyone else has:barf:. If I wanted and ar-15 styled rifle, I would have bought one:neener:. I like my Socom, otherwise I wouldn't have bought it. Thanks for your completely useless information though. Does anyone else have any real, non moronic advice:confused:? Thanks.
 
For my scout squad I just bought the Promag scope mount which was a copy of the ARMS #18. Fits very low but has 3 points of contact so it will stay true. I of course used some blue loctite and it shot wonderfully. You can find them cheaper than other mounts but if you wannna spend the money im sure the actual ARMS #18would work great.
 
Have you considered one of maybe the Bobro, American Defense or Larue extended mounts? Although they are designed to push the scope forward on an AR15, I don't see any reason that you couldn't mount it backwards to move the scope rearward on your rifle. The only things that comes immediately to mind is a possible clearance issue with the bell of the scope.

Although that extended rail that goes all the way back looks like the best deal to me, another alternative for a rail might be one from Yankee Hill. They make extension risers for ARs and again, I don't see any reason why you couldn't just mount it backwards to accomplish what you are looking for.

Ah, didn't realize (perhaps should have, given the rifle in question) that your interest had nothing to do with functionality and everything to do with a status symbol and presumed cool factor.

In that case, let me correct my earlier recommendation:

1) Take SOCOM II down to local gunstore/gunsmith
2) Sell SOCOM II on consignment
3) Use funds from sale to buy SCAR-17
4) Scope it however you want.

End result will be not only an easily scoped rifle, but a better one to boot.

I like my Socom, otherwise I wouldn't have bought it. Thanks for your completely useless information though. Does anyone else have any real, non moronic advice

Come now -- I wasn't rude and didn't point out that you'd bought the king wannabe rifle of all 7.62x51 guns out there, so why degenerate the conversation by calling me moronic? :rolleyes:

Horse, the Socom II is a nice rifle, but it does have a mall ninja factor to it, but is nice and handy, this man needs to scope it, and I doubt he wants your critisizm, since you have contributed nothing useful.
He has an AR-10, and he never once asked what rifle you reccomend..

Sapp, I think the RRA rail would work, and then some Warne rings. :D
 
Horse, you're drama.

Sapp, get the RRA and start seeing what that gun really can shoot. That Socom II is sick and don't let anyone tell you different.
 
It's no drama.....that's what people usually say....all I hear is jealousy. I love the way it shoots and I think that it is a great rifle. It is one of my first permanant rifles to my life long collection :)

Cottonmouth has the best route for you to take imo, if you want to keep the Socom II's rail system. ( Nice lookin rifle there CM.)

I have used a few of them for about 2 yrs over now, and both have worked as advertised. I am currently using one as a back up for an issued M14 service rifle as I'm typing this downrange. Here is the reasons as to why I like it.

1. The "low" version of this mount will put it at almost the same profile as the extended rail SOCOM II version. About 1/4in higher or so.

2. It does not take the place of the cartridge clip (stripper clip) guide, which allows for one to retain it, and use it if the mount is removed.

3. Once optic is zeroed, the mount can be removed (along with rings/optic), and re-installed later without loss of zero.

4. It is such a simple system, it is hard to believe that it will hold up, but both of mine have so far.

5. It weighs considerably less than the Socom rails, and does away with the front heavy feel of the rail system completely

6. Some versions of the mount have built in 20MOA elevation adjustment.

7. Overall cost is low in comparison to other mounts for this type of rifle.

8. I have a few, and can mount/zero one optic to a rifle, and also mount/zero a second optic for the same rifle, such as NVS for example.

9. If one likes rails, this type of mount will work in tandom with the following handguard rail system....

Just a few ideas for you. The options for the M14/M1A are thick nowadays.

FWIW..... I have used both the SR25, and M110 in the past, and was not all that impressed with either. When given the choice, I would rather have the M14 in almost any circumstance... when it comes to job related things.;)

Infantry for well over a decade now.
 
I second the Bassett mount. Got one on my standard and love it. But, I think that the SOCOM is set up for the rail system, and the bassett may destroy the lines.
 
Thanks for all of the information guys. I liked some of the mounts, however most of them were side mount....that is, they mount on the side of the receiver. Problem is, the SOCOM II rail system uses that bolt hole and would have to be completely removed if I decided to go that route. I need a mount that would mount on the top of the VLTOR rail that is currently installed. The only other idea I have been toying around with is actually removing the hand rails and installing a normal handgaurd. Only problem is, I don't think SAI makes an urban handgaurd....and all black would look ridiculous. Suggestions?

The Socom rails are all in black, so a black hand-guard would not look all that different to your current colors.

If you decide it just aint for you, paint it to match the colors of your stock.

Agreed, we have a few members off their meds.

I shoot a socom with a ARMS #36 S-EX used to mount a scope. Seemed to work very nicely. Kind of spendy mount.
 
I have one of these laying around from my time in Iraq. It replaces your stripper clip guide so you can mount your rear scope ring; while mounting your front ring on your rail. If you want it you can have it for $20.
